Maryland abortion doctors charged with murder (Reuters)

BALTIMORE (Reuters) ? Two doctors have been charged with murder after an investigation into a botched abortion uncovered 35 fetuses in a Maryland clinic's freezer, authorities said on Friday, calling the case the first of its kind in the state.

The doctors, Steven Chase Brigham, 55, and Nicola Irene Riley, 46, were arrested on fugitive warrants on Wednesday, police in Elkton, Maryland said.

"They have been indicted based upon a fetal homicide statute. This is probably the first case that Maryland has ever seen with this factual scenario using this statute. It's a unique situation," Cecil County State's Attorney Ellis Rollins told Reuters in an interview.

Brigham is charged with five counts of first-degree murder, five counts of second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, Elkton police said.

Riley is charged with one count each of first-degree murder, second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.

Brigham was arrested on Wednesday in Voorhees, New Jersey, according to a statement by the Elkton Police Department.

Riley was arrested at her home in Salt Lake City, Utah, without incident, according to Lt. Justin Hoyal, spokesman for the Unified Police of Greater Salt Lake.

Prosecutors were expected to seek their extradition back to Maryland.

The investigation began in August 2010, when a young woman sought an abortion from the pair.

The abortion was induced in New Jersey, and the patient was then transported across state lines into Maryland, according to the Elkton police statement.

FETUSES FOUND IN FREEZER

The operation was botched with both Brigham and Riley present, Elkton police said, although the statement did not elaborate on the nature of complications.

Riley took the woman to a nearby hospital, police said. The woman, who was not identified by authorities, survived and was later moved to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

Rollins declined to say why he believed the frozen fetuses were being kept at the clinic or what specifically led to the murder charges, saying that his office would not comment on pending litigation.

Riley had her medical licenses suspended by the state of Maryland, according to the Maryland State Board of Physicians.

Brigham was ordered in 2010 to cease and desist from practicing medicine in the state of Maryland without a license, according to the state medical board.

Documents show that Brigham also had his license suspended by the New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners in October 2010 after officials found that he had performed second- and third-trimester abortions without authorization.

The board further noted that Brigham was not an obstetrician-gynecologist, and that his actions had endangered his patients.

The board's stated decision for the revocation "focused on his practice of starting late-term abortions in New Jersey, where he was not authorized to perform them, and finishing them in Maryland, where he was not licensed to practice medicine," according to a report by the state attorney general.

Brigham has performed approximately 50 such cross-state abortions, according to documents on the Maryland state medical board's website.

Officers who searched the Elkton clinic found several fetuses in a freezer, police said.

A source who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity said there were 35 fetuses found in the clinic freezer.

An Elkton Police spokesman deferred further questions to Kerwin Miller, the assistant state's attorney for Cecil County who is prosecuting the case.

Miller could not be reached for comment.

Attorneys for Riley and Brigham also could not be reached for comment on Friday afternoon.

Waterfox is a Faster, 64-Bit Optimized Version of Firefox for Windows PCs [Firefox]

Waterfox is a Faster, 64-Bit Optimized Version of Firefox for Windows PCsWindows: If you'd like your web browser to run a bit faster, Waterfox is a Firefox clone built to run faster on 64-bit processors.

Mozilla still hasn't officially released any 64-bit builds for Firefox, and Waterfox aims to fill that void. It has one main goal: speed. They've tweaked a lot of Firefox's codebase to work better with 64-bit processors, so if you're running a 64-bit version of Windows, it should give you a solid speed boost. It also updates whenever Firefox does, so you're never behind, and uses your current Firefox profile, so you don't have to do any extra setup. All of your add-ons should work out of the box, too.

If you don't like Waterfox for any reason, you might also check out previously mentioned Pale Moon, another Windows-optimized Firefox build. It updates a bit less quickly than Waterfox, and lots of users find Waterfox to be faster, but Pale Moon also has a few other UI tweaks. Hit the link to check out Waterfox.

Waterfox is a free download for Windows only.

Poll: Republican Romney tops Iowa, Santorum surges (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Republican presidential frontrunner Mitt Romney has clinched a lead in the Iowa caucuses vote next week and Rick Santorum is surging, according to a new poll commissioned by CNN and Time magazine.

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor whose unsuccessful presidential run in 2008 took a heavy hit when he lost Iowa, was at 25 percent of the vote, 3 points ahead of Texas congressman Ron Paul.

Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator and social conservative, has moved into third place, earning the vote of 16 percent of Iowa voters surveyed by the news organizations six days before the caucuses kick off the 2012 election cycle on January 3.

Santorum's strong standing is a blow to the fortunes of Paul who had been leading in many Iowa polls.

"We've always felt like we could trust the people of Iowa," Santorum told CNN in an interview.

In recent weeks, party watchers have wondered which candidate would win the votes of Iowa's many evangelical voters.

The Republican candidates are competing for their party's nomination to challenge Democratic President Barack Obama in an election in November next year.

Santorum received the endorsement of one of the state's top Christian leaders, Bob Vander Plaats of The Family Leader group.

The poll surveyed 457 registered Republicans who are likely to attend the caucuses. Paul's campaign counts as key to its strength its ability to attract Democrats and independents, who can participate in the caucuses if they enroll in the Republican Party on January 3.

In the CNN interview, Santorum criticized Paul's record as a legislator.

"Ron doesn't have a very long record of actually passing anything in Washington, D.C.," Santorum said.

GMO, REE, MDW: Energy Department Latest to Forecast Short Supply of Rare Earth Metals

?

In not so recent past, rare earth stocks were subject to wild speculation followed by a long drawn correction phase. Now after a month long consolidation, rare earth stocks such as General Moly Inc (NYSE: GMO), Rare Element Resources Ltd (NYSE: REE), and Midway Gold Corp (NYSE: MDW) are back in action. The ?news? fuelling the renewed interest in these stocks is the United States Department of Energy forecasting a supply shortage of rare earth metals in the short to medium term.

The Energy Department is the latest to blow the short supply issue and expects at least five rare earth metals?dysprosium, terbium, europium, neodymium and yttrium to remain supply-challenged till 2015. While the department, in its assessment, said the supply constraints are expected to decrease in the medium to long term, the news of a potential short supply situation from a credible source such as the DoE is enough for smart money to pump up these stocks. This potential shortage is sure to drive up the costs of rare earth metals as markets have already seen in the case of MolyCorp. Rare earth metal supply has been constrained due to lack of capital, long lead times, trade policies, besides other factors. Meanwhile, the demand of permanent magnets which require neodymium and dysprosium, used in wind turbines, electric motors and a number of other electric appliances, is increasing continuously.

MolyCorp is probably the best pick in the industry with existing operations and profitable track record, but these small cap stocks are likely to outperform the markets if rare earth metals indeed fall short of demand. General Moly Inc (NYSE: GMO), for example, has already jumped 20 per cent in the last month on the back of positive developments related to its Mt. Hope rare earth project in the state of Nevada. This high beta stock is likely to see more buying now that the Mt. Hope project nears completion.

Rare Element Resources Ltd (NYSE: REE) has updated about its Bear Lodge project in Wyoming. In addition, the company is making progress at its other projects including Bull Hill, and Whitetail Ridge. Midway Gold Corp (NYSE: MDW) is not exactly a rare earth play as its core business is gold exploration. However, many rare earth metals are found in commercially viable amounts in gold mines. As it is an exploration stage company, Midway?s story is still to unfold. However, the current price of $2.19 looks attractive after falling significantly from $3.??

Schools object to NCAA scholarship plan

Updated?Dec 27, 2011 1:56 PM ET

?

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP)

Schools are objecting to an NCAA reform measure on multiyear scholarships sought by university presidents.

More than 75 schools want to override a proposal allowing multiyear athletic scholarships rather than one-year renewable awards. That's the number of dissenters needed for reconsideration by the Division I Board of Directors when it meets next month in Indianapolis.

More schools have objected to NCAA plans to give athletes a $2,000 stipend for living costs not covered by scholarships. That proposal also returns to the Board of Directors.

Both measures were pushed by NCAA President Mark Emmert and adopted as emergency legislation after a presidential summit in August.

A permanent reversal could force schools to have two sets of standards, with an obligation to honor multiyear scholarship offers for some students but not others.

Emirates Air Line: London Cable Car Across The Thames

| Dec 23, 2011 | 1min:59sec

London's first cable car tower has been completed and the transport link made its debut on the London Underground Tube map.

Transport for London released a photograph on Tuesday showing the completed support tower while Emirates has provided an animated video of how the cable car system will work once operational.

Measuring more than 200 feet tall and weighing 270 tonnes, the North Immediate Tower is the shortest of three being built to carry a cable car across the River Thames.

The cable car is located on the north side of the Thames, near the new Emirates Royal Dock terminal, and will be called the Emirates Air Line.

Once opened, the Emirates Air Line will give passengers stunning aerial views of London as they travel between Emirates Greenwich Peninsula and Emirates Royal Docks.

An image showing how the cable car will appear on the London Underground tube map was also released and illustrates the route with a strip of three lines using the corporate colour of Emirates, the project's sponsor.

Emirates is sponsoring the cable car for 36 million pounds over a period of 10 years.

It has become the first commercial brand to appear on the London Underground Tube map in its 78-year history.

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said the Emirates Air Line is a vital part of the regeneration of East London, providing a much-needed river crossing in this part of the capital.

He also said investment in infrastructure, such as the cable car project, is essential for London's economic recovery, generating jobs and showing to the world that this city is looking to the future with vision and confidence.

An official opening date for the cable car is yet to be confirmed, though many hope that it will be ready in time for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Transport for London has been vague about an official opening date and simply said all three towers are due to become operational by "late spring 2012".

Zimbabwe: 11 drown in holiday boating accident (AP)

HARARE, Zimbabwe ? Zimbabwean state radio says 11 people died, most of them children, in a Christmas Day boating accident on a lake outside the capital.

The radio said Monday a pleasure boat capsized at Lake Chivero on Sunday, drowning 11 of 19 people on board. The children were on a holiday outing at the lake 20 miles (30 kilometers) west of Harare and were aged between five and 14, it said.

The radio identified seven of the children by name.

The radio report also said a wildlife ranger at the lake died Saturday when his canoe overturned in rough weather. The lake is also a conservancy, leisure resort and water-supply reservoir.

Boating accidents on the lake are largely blamed on poor enforcement of safety practices.

Skype offering free airport WiFi to Mac, PC and iOS users in December (Digital Trends)

skype holidaysSkype says it wants to make travelers? lives easier over the holidays and has announced a free WiFi deal with certain airports. If you find yourself stuck in one of the 50+ participating airports? terminals over the holidays, you?ll be able to tap into a free hour of Internet access at a third party wireless hotspot, courtesy of the Microsoft-acquired voIP service.

The date for the free WiFi offer begins Wednesday, December 21 and ends December 27. Skype video and voice calls will be free and available to those with either a PC, Mac or iOS devices. It doesn?t seem as if those with Android, Blackberry or Windows Phone devices will get to access the offer.

To participate in the WiFi bounty, you?ll need to have the latest version of Skype for Windows or Mac, or have downloaded the Skype WiFi app for the iPad or iPhone. Sign in to your account and verify that the location is correct; if it?s not, Skype WiFi charges by the minute. Only one hour is free, but that may be the pleasant distraction needed during this stressful season. Major airports like JFK and the San Francisco International Airport are on the list; check with Skype to see if your airport is participating.

Skype?s holiday message? Love and family: ?The holidays are all about connecting with those you love. Skype is helping people maintain these meaningful connections this holiday season from wherever they may be,? said Skype product marketing director, Linda Summers.

The company is picking up the Google slack this season. Google has in the past provided free wireless to many weary travelers stuck in airports around this time, though it seems as if Santa?s taking a break this year. Aside from the free offer, the Skype Credit powered WiFi program allows users Internet access at over 1 million WiFi hotspots globally.

We just met with Sony at its New York City store on Madison Ave. in Midtown, and boy did it have some excellent news for in-ear headphone lovers. While sitting down in the PlayStation Lounge, we briefly demoed nearly every piece of its lineup of XBA balanced armature intra-aurals, which if you'll recall, were announced for parts of Asia back in September. While the 11-model lineup, ranging from standard buds to Bluetooth and noise-cancelling sets, is just beginning to hit those regions now, we've been told that folks in the US can expect them to arrive on American shores next year, with official availability details due at CES. The units we checked out are voiced and finished as those set to hit production, but according to Sony, some of the cabling now in place will change before the stateside release. Interested audiophiles and music lovers can click on past the break for the full details, as well as our initial -- and brief -- impressions.

Russell Brand Lands FX Talk Show

Show will have Brand interacting with audience.
By Gil Kaufman

Russell Brand
Photo: Jemal Countess/ Getty Images

Russell Brand is rarely at a loss for words. In fact, the British comedian/actor/Katy Perry hubby can't seem to find enough ways to corral his torrent of thoughts, jokes and observations. And since he's already hosted awards shows, radio programs, headlined movies and perfected the art of erudite stand-up comedy on both sides of the Atlantic, an American late-night series seems like the next logical step.

According to Entertainment Weekly that's exactly where Brand will be headed in 2012. The "Arthur" star has signed up with the FX network to headline a series of six half-hour late-night comedy specials that will be filmed in front of a live audience. The shows will find Brand offering his, "unfiltered take on current events, politics and pop culture" while drawing heavily on audience interaction to keep the conversation flowing.

"I am so excited I'm on the point of climax, in fact I will put the 'O' into FX, which spells Fox, which is actually the channel's real name," Brand said in a statement. "That's the only thing that worries me about all this to be honest. At least I'll be able to have a Christmas drink with Bill O'Reilly." Though the format of the program is still being worked out, unnamed sources told the magazine that viewers should not expect a typical talk show. The programs are slated to debut this spring.

Brand will also voice a character in an animated comedy that he co-created that will air on the Fox network, following up on his voiceover work in the big screen animated features "Hop" and "Despicable Me." Deadline Hollywood reported that the show could be loosely focused on Brand's notoriously hedonistic lifestyle in his 20s.

Democrats drop plan to give tax cut to employers (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Democratic officials say a new payroll tax cut plan by Senate Democrats drops President Barack Obama's proposal to award the tax cut to employers in addition to every worker who draws a paycheck.

The move would bring the cost of the payroll tax cut, the centerpiece of Obama's jobs agenda, down to $185 billion. Obama's original proposal, which would have cut employers' payroll tax contribution in half, from 6.2 percent to 3.1 percent, was estimated to cost $265 billion.

The new plan would retain Obama's proposal to boost the payroll tax cut to 3.1 percentage points from the current 2 percentage point cut that expires at the end of the month.

A Democratic aide also says the Democrats' revamped payroll tax cut plan will contain a modified set of proposals to offset its cost to the Treasury. It will retain a tax on income exceeding $1 million, though at a lower rate than the 3.25 percent millionaires' surcharge contained in a proposal that failed in the Senate last week.

Keeping the millionaires' tax surcharge guarantees that GOP senators won't support the plan, despite changes that move the plan in the direction of Republicans.

The new measure is also expected to contain spending cuts considered by the defunct deficit supercommittee. And the Democratic initiative will adopt a GOP proposal to take away food stamp and unemployment insurance benefits from the few wealthy people who receive them.

The Senate is expected to hold a test vote on the new version later this week. A GOP payroll tax cut plan also failed to advance in the Senate last week.

House Republicans are expected to unveil their version of a plan for the payroll tax cut early this week. It's expected to retain the current 2 percent cut. The House plan also would extend unemployment insurance benefits for people who have been out of work for more than six months and prevent doctors from absorbing a huge cut in their Medicare reimbursements.

Another House provision is aimed at speeding construction of a proposed Keystone XL pipeline that pits environmentalists on one side, and industry and some labor unions ? who say the project would create thousands of jobs ? on the other. The 1,700-mile structure would carry as much as 700,000 barrels of oil a day from tar sands in Alberta, Canada, to refineries in Texas, passing through Montana, South Dakota, Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma.

The officials required anonymity because the proposal hasn't been officially revealed.

(AP) ? A Pakistani actress who posed in the nude for an Indian magazine with the initials of Pakistan's feared and powerful intelligence agency on her arm has triggered fury across this conservative nation.

Veena Malik's photo on the website of FHM India, in advance of its publication in the magazine's December issue, has been lighting up social network websites since earlier this week.

Many here anticipate a backlash, as nationalists and Islamists regularly stage rallies against anything they deem an insult to Islam or to the national honor. India and Pakistan have fought three wars, and the Inter-Services Intelligence agency or ISI has been accused of sponsoring terrorist attacks inside India.

Malik has broken Pakistani religious and national taboos in the past. She is a target for conservative ire and a heroine to some Pakistani liberals.

Conservative cleric Maulana Abdul Qawi declared on Aaj TV on Saturday that her latest venture into controversy was a "shame for all Muslims."

In an interview with Pakistani Geo television broadcast Saturday, however, Malik said the nude photo was published in violation of her agreement with FHM India and she was considering legal action against the magazine.

Malik acknowledged having been photographed for a "bold but not nude shot." She said the editor of the magazine had promised that he would cover most of the photo with the ISI initials.

The photo was intended to poke fun at the Indian fear of Pakistani spies, she said, adding "whatever happens (in India), people say ISI is behind that."

Magazine editor Kabeer Sharma said Malik had given full consent for the shoot and the picture.

"We have all the record(s)," he told the Pakistani television station. "Veena was very excited about that ISI idea."

Zubair Khan, a 40-year-old shopkeeper in the northwestern city of Peshawar, agreed, saying the photo had given rival India another opportunity to insult Pakistan.

"She has earned a bad name for the entire Pakistan nation," he said.

Others questioned the authenticity of the photo.

"It seems to be an Indian attempt to malign Pakistan by faking her nude pics, or she might have done it to get a cheap publicity," said Lubna Khalid, 38, a housewife in the southern port city of Karachi.

Twitter commentator Umair Javed however called on Pakistanis to "make copies of the picture and bury it in your backyard. This way, our grandkids will know there were some amongst us who lived free!"

Asked by reporters whether Pakistan would "pursue the matter" legally, the country's Interior Minister Rehman Malik said Saturday, "First, let us see whether it is real or fake."

Malik does most of her work in India. The entertainment sector there is booming, while Pakistan's is moribund. Her ties to Pakistan's archrival have landed her in controversy in the past.

During a much-publicized talk show appearance early this year, she lashed out her nemesis Abdul Qawi, who criticized her for having a scripted love affair with an Indian actor on an Indian reality show.

"What is your problem with me?" an angry Malik demanded of the scholar, who had accused her of insulting Islam.

(AP) ? U.S. officials gave Pakistan soldiers the wrong location when asking for clearance to attack militants along the border last weekend, Pakistani military officials said Friday. The strike resulted in the deaths of 24 soldiers and a major crisis in relations between Washington and Islamabad.

The claim was the latest in a series by mostly anonymous officials in both countries trying to explain what happened before and during last week's bombing of two Pakistani border checkpoints by U.S. aircraft.

NATO and America have expressed regret for the loss of lives, but have rejected Pakistani allegations it was a deliberate act of aggression.

The incident has pushed already strained ties between Washington and Islamabad close to rupture, complicating American hopes of securing Pakistan's help in negotiating an end to the Afghan war. In retaliation for the raid, Islamabad has already closed its western border to NATO supplies traveling into landlocked Afghanistan.

Thousands of Islamic extremists and other demonstrators took to the streets across the country after Friday prayers to protest the Nov. 26 strike. Some called on the army to attack the U.S.-led coalition in Afghanistan. The chants were a worrying sign for the West because it indicates that anger over the incident is uniting hard-liners and the military.

Pakistan's army, still smarting from the criticism it received after the unilateral U.S. chopper-borne raid that killed Osama bin Laden on May 2, has ordered border troops to take a more aggressive posture against intruders, said Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani.

"Instructions have been issued to all units of the Pakistan armed forces to respond, with full force, to any act of aggression and infringement of Pakistan's territorial frontiers," he said.

U.S. officials have told The Associated Press that Saturday's incident occurred when a joint U.S. and Afghan patrol requested backup after being hit by mortar and small arms fire by Taliban militants.

Before responding, the patrol first checked with the Pakistani army, which reported it had no troops in the area, they said.

U.S. officials say Pakistani troops had "given the go-ahead" for the strikes, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday. This account would suggest that the Pakistanis were at least partly to blame for the deadly error.

A Pakistani military official who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the information confirmed that the Americans had provided his side with a location for the planned strike.

However, he said, the information arrived late, Pakistan never cleared the strike, and the coordinates provided were incorrect.

"Wrong information about (the) area of operation was provided to Pakistani officials a few minutes before the strike," he said. "Without getting clearance from Pakistan side, the post had already been engaged by U.S. helicopters and fighter jets."

The prime minister said that after the attack, military authorities contacted the border coordination center, where the two sides liaise over operations close to the frontier. The strikes continued, however, and "that relief and reinforcements sent from the nearby Pakistani posts also came under attack," he said.

U.S. officials at the border coordination center later "apologized privately to Pakistani officials for initially providing wrong information and the subsequent engagement of the post without prior information," he said.

The U.S. and NATO have both launched investigations. Washington has not formally apologized, saying it would not be appropriate before an investigation into the incident is complete. The mountainous, poorly defined border has been a regular flashpoint between U.S. and Pakistan, with Washington accusing Pakistani troops of tolerating or supporting militants who operate there and attack inside Afghanistan.

Anti-American demonstrations took place around Pakistan on Friday, including a 2,000-strong rally in the country's commercial hub of Karachi by the Sunni extremist Sipah-e-Sahaba group. The group is banned because of its ties to al-Qaida, but that ban is largely ignored.

Aurangezeb Farooqi, a leader of the group, asked the protesters whether they were ready to join the army to fight Americans. Many raised their fists in response and shouted "God is great!" Some held up placards saying: "There is only one treatment for America: jihad, jihad," meaning holy war.

Washington believes that Islamabad's cooperation is vital to negotiate a truce with Afghan insurgent leaders based on Pakistani soil, so that the U.S. can withdraw most of its troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

But Islamabad has its own interests, chiefly in ensuring that whatever regime remains in Kabul after U.S. forces withdraw is friendly to Pakistan, and hostile to India, its long-term regional foe. Consequently, Pakistan appears to be in no rush to take political risks helping the United States.

World Bank approves $255 million plan for Haiti (AP)

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti ? The World Bank will spend $255 million to help house Haitians, clean up neighborhoods and send thousands of children to school over the next year under a plan approved Thursday by the agency's board.

The new funds seek to fill critical needs in Haiti as the troubled nation nears the second anniversary of the January 2010 earthquake that toppled thousands of homes, destroyed hundreds of schools and force more than a million Haitians into precarious settlements in the capital and elsewhere.

The money will go toward housing 22,500 people, many of whom have been living in the hundreds of tent camps that sprang up after the quake. It will also help spruce up parks and repair roads in neighborhoods that are home for 75,000 people, pay for school tuition for 100,000, train 8,000 teachers and provide hot meals five days a week for 75,000 youngsters.

The funds give hope that reconstruction will move along even though a recovery panel that was supposed to coordinate those efforts dissolved in October.

The Interim Haiti Recovery Commission, which was co-chaired by former U.S. President Bill Clinton, came to an end after Haitian authorities failed to renew its 18-month mandate.

A transition team and Prime Minister Garry Conille are trying to figure out the shape and responsibilities of a new panel.

The World Bank announcement came the same week that a forum hosted by the Haitian government and the Inter-American Development Bank brought hundreds of potential investors to Haiti, an impoverished country long overlooked because of its tattered infrastructure, cumbersome laws and unpredictable political climate.

President Michel Martelly said at the event that he wants to create 500,000 jobs within three years.

Some of those jobs are to be generated by two international businesses that announced projects this week: a $224 million industrial park in the north, the country's biggest private investment since the quake, and a $45 million Marriott Hotel to be built in the capital.

Why do some people never forget a face?

ScienceDaily (Dec. 2, 2011) ? "Face recognition is an important social skill, but not all of us are equally good at it," says Beijing Normal University cognitive psychologist Jia Liu. But what accounts for the difference? A new study by Liu and colleagues Ruosi Wang, Jingguang Li, Huizhen Fang, and Moqian Tian provides the first experimental evidence that the inequality of abilities is rooted in the unique way in which the mind perceives faces. "Individuals who process faces more holistically" -- that is, as an integrated whole -- "are better at face recognition," says Liu.

The findings will appear in an upcoming issue of Psychological Science, a journal published by the Association for Psychological Science.

In daily life, we recognize faces both holistically and also "analytically" -- that is, picking out individual parts, such as eyes or nose. But while the brain uses analytical processing for all kinds of objects -- cars, houses, animals -- "holistic processing is thought to be especially critical to face recognition," says Liu.

To isolate holistic processing as the key to face recognition, the researchers first measured the ability of study participants -- 337 male and female students -- to remember whole faces, using a task in which they had to select studied faces and flowers from among unfamiliar ones.

The next two tasks measured performance in tasks that mark holistic processing. The composite-face effect (CFE) shows up when two faces are split horizontally and stuck together. It's easier to identify the top half-face when it's misaligned with the bottom one than when the two halves are fitted smoothly together. "That's because our brain automatically combines them to form a new" -- and unfamiliar -- "face," says Liu: evidence of holistic processing. The other marker of holistic processing is the whole-part effect (WPE). In this one, people are shown a face, then asked to recognize a part of it -- say, the nose. They do better when the feature is presented within the whole face than when it stands on its own among other noses: again, we remember the nose integrated into the whole face. The researchers also assessed participants' general intelligence.

The results: Those participants who scored higher on CFE and WPE -- that is, who did well in holistic processing -- also performed better at the first task of recognizing faces. But there was no link between facial recognition and general intelligence, which is made up of various cognitive processes -- a suggestion that face processing is unique.

"Our findings partly explains why some never forget faces, while others misrecognize their friends and relatives frequently," says Liu. That's why the research holds promise for therapies for that second category of people, who may suffer disorders such as prosopagnosia (face blindness) and autism. Knowing that the mind receives a face as one whole thing and not as a collection of individual parts, "we may train people on holistic processing to improve their ability in recognizing faces," Liu says.

The article is entitled, "Individual Differences in Holistic Processing Predict Face-recognition Ability."

'Super 8' And More: 10 Best Film Scores Of 2011

'Hugo' and 'War Horse' also make the list of film music that moved us this year.
By Kara Warner

Continuing with our comprehensive collection of best-of 2011 movie stories, in which we count down our favorite elements of our obsessive movie love (including the top 20 movie trailers and the ), this compilation is focused on yet another crucial element involved in a film's success: the music. A good film score can make or break a scene, move you to or prevent you from shedding tears, make you smile. A great one can do all of the above. Here's a look at our favorite musical masterworks this year.

10. "Rango"
This south-of-the-border-inspired score was a clever and creative companion to Gore Verbinski and Johnny Depp's quirky animated western about a domesticated chameleon who dreams of becoming an actor and leading a more adventurous life. Hans Zimmer's spin on spaghetti-western sound with an authentic kick of Mexican folk from Los Lobos made for a perfect musical marriage.

9. "The Muppets"
If there's anything better than seeing the Muppets back on the big screen, it's the concerted effort put into the film's multiple musical layers. ‪For example, you can't talk about composer Christophe Beck's excellent original instrumentals without mentioning "Flight of the Conchords" star-turned-music-supervisor Bret McKenzie's catchy tunes "Life's a Happy Song" or "Man or Muppet." Not to mention the star-studded Green Album that features favorite artists including Weezer, OK Go, the Fray, My Morning Jacket, Amy Lee, Feist, Hayley Williams and Rachael Yamagata belting out updated versions of classic Muppet tunes.

8. "War Horse" and "The Adventures of Tintin"
‪Any year in which John Williams composes a film score is a year in which you'll likely find his work named to the tops of all the best-of lists. And this year Williams is serving up the one-two punch of "War Horse" and "Tintin," both of which feature the Oscar winner's sweeping, stand-out, magical touch. They are paired together on this list because they're both uniquely terrific but it's too hard to rank one above the other.

7. "The Artist"
‪ One of the year's most buzzworthy films, "The Artist" features an appropriately memorable score. Composed by Ludovic Bource, this score is light and happy with a delicate and glamorous finish reminiscent of the film's 1920s setting.

6. "Hugo"
‪It makes perfect sense that Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese would pair up with Oscar-winning composer Howard Shore to score a family-friendly crowd-pleaser. There's a sense of wonder, magic and magnitude in Shore's music that fits perfectly with the film's underlying theme.

5. "Midnight in Paris"
‪Similar to the variety of music featured in "The Muppets," Woody Allen chose to incorporate old-school classics by Cole Porter, Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington, along with original instrumental music composed by Stephane Wrembel that further enhanced the film's love letter to nostalgia and self-reflection.

4. "Drive"
‪As much talk as there has been surrounding the story and performances in Nicolas Refn's violent thriller "Drive," the film's score, composed by Cliff Martinez, has been getting just as much attention for its unique and classically cool '80s retro synthesizer sound. Much like how Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross' different and daring score for "The Social Network" took the critics by storm, Martinez's work on "Drive" is poised to do the same.

3. "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo"
‪Speaking of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, fans can't wait to hear and see what last year's Oscar winners have done with the music for David Fincher's adaptation of "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo." Although the film doesn't open for a few more weeks, a special sneak peek of the score has appeared online via the company producing it. Unsurprisingly, the music is as chilling, complex and captivating as the film's poster and trailer.

2. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2"
‪In looking at prolific composer Alexandre Desplat's résumé, it's a wonder the man has any time to sleep with the number of film scores he churns out annually. Not that we'll ever complain, however, because the fruits of his 2011 labor include "The Tree of Life," "Carnage," "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" and our #2 favorite score of the year: "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2." Desplat's work had our emotions perfectly in tune with what played out on screen: on the edge of our seats, prepped for battle, celebratory and sniffling.

1. "Super 8"
There are several wonderfully epic scores on this list, but the biggest, baddest, bell-iest was Michael Giacchino's brilliant music for "Super 8." It is so many things: sweet, sentimental, wondrous, fascinating ... Plus, in trying to pinpoint that very specific tintinnabular sound that plays throughout the film, we learned about a new instrument: a celesta, which Giacchino told us is kind of a "bell piano."
