(AP) ? Who were those willowy young women with Barack and Michelle Obama ? and where'd they hide little Sasha and Malia?

Four years is a long time when it's a half or a third of your life, and so TV viewers who hadn't seen the Obama girls much since 2008 might have been truly startled at just how much they'd grown when they appeared onstage with their father Thursday night.

After all, Malia, now 14, who started (gasp!) high school this week, was just about as tall as her already tall parents.

Relaxed and composed, in a purplish blue sleeveless dress from H&M, Malia laughed with her father onstage after his remarks, and earlier sat and applauded with her mom and her sister, Sasha, who wore a black-and-white print frock from Anthropologie. (Now 11, Sasha hardly fits in her parents' laps anymore, and even resists a cuddle, the couple ruefully told People in an interview last month.)

There was one sign, though, that the girls were still kids: "Yes, you do have to go to school in the morning," their dad warned them at the beginning of his speech.

What struck one former White House aide was the ease and comfort with which the girls were inhabiting their public roles.

"Their smiles were genuine and huge tonight," said Anita McBride, a former chief of staff to Laura Bush, as well as an assistant to Bush's husband. "There was no awkwardness. They clearly have adjusted to their life in the public eye." McBride said she was also stunned by how poised and grownup the girls looked.

One reason Thursday's scene was so striking is that the American public doesn't see the daughters regularly, especially on TV. "There hasn't been a steady stream of images to relate to," said Sandra Sobieraj, a correspondent for People who covers the first family.

So for many, the most familiar images are from four years ago. At the 2008 convention in Denver, Sasha, then 7, fidgeted in her purple children's dress, little white barrettes on either side of her head.

"Daddy, what city are you in?" she called out in a high-pitched voice as her dad appeared on a huge video screen the night of Michelle Obama's speech. "I love you, Daddy!" called out Malia, 10, looking a bit older in a two-toned dress with straps.

Then came election night in Chicago. There was Sasha in a black party dress, bounding gleefully up into her father's arms, planting a big kiss on his cheek ? a reminder that young children were about to live in the White House for the first time since Chelsea Clinton, Amy Carter, and before them, the younger Kennedy kids, Caroline and John.

And of course there was the inauguration. Who could resist the sight of Malia, in a periwinkle-blue coat and fluffy black scarf, snapping pictures from her enviable perch on the inaugural podium?

Just the night before, she and Sasha, whose inaugural outfit was a light pink coat, had danced onstage with the Jonas Brothers ? a perfect example of how, as much as her parents vowed to keep their lives as normal as possible, the girls were truly celebrities from Day One.

For the president and first lady, protecting their privacy was an evolving skill. Candidate Obama quickly regretted, for example, an all-family interview granted to the TV show "Access Hollywood."

Once the family arrived at the White House, strict arrangements were in place. The news media traditionally respects the privacy of a president's young children and doesn't photograph or report on them unless they are in a public setting with their parents.

Yet the couple constantly talks about their kids. At times the president has embarrassed them, as when he told an audience that Malia once got a 73 on a science test. (He later apologized.)

Two years ago, when Malia first went to summer camp, the White House discouraged mention of it in the media, even though Obama mentioned it in interviews. And recently he revealed the state where both daughters had just spent a month at camp ? New Hampshire.

"They just love talking about their girls," said Sobieraj. "They get genuine joy from them, and so they talk about it. To a degree that makes the staff uncomfortable, because the line is shifting."

Other White House kids have led less public lives, perhaps a function of the times. Jackie Kennedy was so concerned about keeping her kids out of view that she organized kindergarten for Caroline inside the White House, writes Doug Wead, an expert on presidential offspring, in "All the President's Children." (She was out of town when her husband allowed those famous photos of Caroline and John in the Oval Office to be taken, Wead writes.)

And Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton were extremely protective of Chelsea, who entered the White House at an awkward stage. Her parents were furious when Mike Myers referred to their daughter in an insulting way on "Saturday Night Live." The comic later apologized.

Whereas many White House children through history seem to suffer some sort of embarrassment or scandal, the Obama girls have had none.

"Compared to other White House families, this is clearly the most functional," said Wead, who chronicles a host of misfortunes of past White House kids in his book. (He's now working on a book about White House siblings.) "This has been one of the most successful stories."

McBride, who now directs programming on the history of first ladies at American University, says that no matter your politics, it's comforting to see a happy first family. "Whether you support this president or not, you want to know that it's healthy and grounding and going well at home. "They clearly are a family that's got it together."

The Obamas certainly relish spending time with their kids. The first family is well known to have dinner together in the White House most nights; Michelle Obama in her convention speech evoked the image of the family, at the table, "strategizing about middle-school friendships."

That will likely help the president avoid some of the guilt that, Wead says, has afflicted some presidents of the past who spent little time with their offspring ? like that which he says overcame Ulysses S. Grant on the occasion of his daughter's White House wedding. She left on her honeymoon, and Wead says the president then collapsed on her bed and wept.

"He had been so busy as president that he felt he had missed her life," Wead says. "It all had happened too fast for him."

Police searching UK home of family slain in France | Nation & World ...

LONDON ?

French and British police searched the U.K. home of a British-Iraqi couple slain while vacationing in the French Alps, as it emerged Saturday that all four people killed in the attack took two gunshots to the head. Meanwhile, relatives arrived in France to help care for the couple's two surviving daughters, one of whom was badly wounded.

Questions remained about potential motive for the killings as well as the identity of one victim, an elderly woman found dead in the couple's bullet-riddled BMW. Police have said they are probing reports of a financial dispute between the slain husband and his brother, but stress they were following all leads. The brother has denied any dispute.

The identity of the dead couple - mechanical design engineer Saad al Hilli and his wife, Ikbal - was based partly on the testimony of their 4-year-old daughter Zeena, who survived unhurt by hiding under her mother's skirt as some 25 automatic-handgun rounds were fired at the family car.

Her older sister, 7-year-old Zaina, was badly wounded in the attack and is in a medically-induced coma. Aside from the elderly woman shot dead dead in the car, French cyclist Sylvain Mollier, 45, whom authorities suspect was in the wrong place at the wrong time, was also killed in Wednesday's rampage.

French prosecutor Eric Maillaud, based in Annecy near the site of the killing, told a press conference there Saturday that each of the dead was shot twice in the head - one more time than previously stated - in addition to an undisclosed additional number of times elsewhere.

Autopsies on the bodies were completed late Friday, Maillaud said, adding that the bodies of the victims will be returned to their family "as soon as possible."

Maillaud remained tight-lipped throughout Saturday's news conference, saying he was "at the limits" of what he could publically disclose. But he confirmed that France has asked Italy and Switzerland to assist in the hunt for whoever is responsible for the shootings, which took place just a short drive from the borders of both countries.

French investigators arrived in Britain on Friday night, and police on Saturday snapped pictures of the al Hilli home in the village of Claygate, a London suburb in the county of Surrey. Some officers entered the house in protective suits, while other carried boxes with equipment and evidence bags into an investigation tent erected outside.

Authorities in Britain, too, revealed few details. The French police who had traveled to Surrey spoke only to praise cooperation with their U.K. counterparts in what they described as a long and complex investigation. Surrey's police force stressed that the probe is French-led and that the emphasis now is on the victims of the tragedy.

Asst. Chief Constable Rob Price of Surrey police confirmed that family liaison officers have been deployed in the U.K. and in France to help the victims, while Maillaud, the French prosecutor, said relatives of the dead have arrived in France to help care for the two young sisters. He did not identify the relatives or say how many were arriving.

Maillaud has said investigators are looking forward to speaking to 7-year-old Zaina, who was shot in the shoulder and beaten, but she remains in the medically induced coma. Authorities have questioned her 4-year-old sister Zeena, but Maillaud has said much of her account was filled with "kids' words."

Authorities have been reluctant to discuss what prompted the killings, but investigators are looking into a possible family dispute over money as a potential motive.

After learning about media reports that they may have been fighting over money, Saad al Hilli's brother Zaid came forward to British police Friday and denied any conflict in the family, French prosecutors said.

But Mae Faisal El-Wailly, a childhood friend of the brothers, made available a letter written to her by Saad last year that alluded to a possible inheritance dispute. She said the brothers' father had died recently, and she described the family as wealthy and well-traveled.

But El-Wailly added that she did not believe Zaid had anything to do with the killings.

"Zaid and I do not communicate any more as he is another control freak and tried a lot of underhanded things even when my father was alive," Saad wrote. The letter was dated Sept. 16, 2011.

"He tried to take control of father's assets and demanded control," the letter says. "(A)nyway it is a long story and now I have just had to wipe him out of my life. Sad but I need to concentrate now on my wife and two lovely girls ..."

Public records show Zaid resigned from Saad's small aeronautics design firm, Shtech Ltd., last year.

At the press conference Saturday, Maillaud said authorities will talk to the brother. "He will be interviewed just as all of the rest of the al-Hilli family, who are going to be identified in the coming days," Maillaud said.

Early reports have suggested that the elderly woman shot dead may have been the girls' grandmother, but authorities have not confirmed that.

Swedish authorities have confirmed that a passport discovered on the scene corresponds to a Swedish person living in Sweden. But as of yet no absolute connection has been made between the older woman in the car and the passport or between her and the rest of the victims, authorities said.

Banking Lobby Seeking ?More Firepower? in Washington

By Sarah Borchersen-Keto, CCH Washington News Bureau, Contributing Author, the CCH Federal Banking Law Reporter and Bank Digest.

The American Bankers Association said it has approved the establishment of a new nonprofit 501(c)(4) organization, the Financial Education and Advocacy Initiative, aimed at boosting the banking industry?s lobbying power in Washington D.C.

?This new organization will give us more firepower in our battle to protect the banking franchise,? said ABA President and CEO Frank Keating. Establishing a 501(c)(4) is ?a capability that most large trade associations have, and the board approved the proposal so that ABA can more effectively serve its members in today?s environment,? said ABA spokesman Jeff Sigmund.

However, according to watchdog group Public Citizen, the creation of the 501(c)(4) signals a new approach by the ABA to repeal or weaken the Dodd-Frank Act, by ?secretly pouring millions of dollars into the 2012 elections ? to defeat Wall Street reform supporters in the Senate.? Public Citizen is urging the Internal Revenue Service to examine the purpose and anticipated activity of the new organization, before deciding whether it qualifies for 501(c)(4) tax status.

Hands on with Amazon's new Kindle HD

7 hrs.

Amazon revealed its latest Kindle devices?on Thursday,?including the new Kindle Fire HD. The tablet?comes in?two sizes, 7 inches and 8.9 inches, and it's pretty darn impressive --?physically at least.

While there weren't too many of the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD models floating around during the?hands-on event?following the Amazon's initial?presentation, we caught up with Peter Larsen, Amazon's vice president of Kindle, and checked out the one he was carrying. "A lot of other tablets focus only on the display," he told us while flipping through various apps. "We hope we have the best features, the best content, the best customer service, and the best prices."

"This isn't a gadget, it's a service," Larsen continued, echoing the words Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said?earlier in the day?when he introduced the tablet.

Of course, seeing just how well the new?Kindle Fire HD functions as a service will?take more time than we had with the device. So instead, we obsessed on?the obvious details. How does it feel? Is it speedy? Does it seem like something we might hold all day? Yes, yes, and yes?? based on a couple of minutes with Larsen's device and a demo model of the 7-inch version.

Unlike the plain ol' Kindle Fire, the new HD models are comfortable to hold. They're well-balanced, thin, light?and reminded us a bit of the Nexus 7 and the way it made us feel like Goldilocks after she found the right bed.?

Amazon seems to have gotten the body right. What about the guts, though? Those might be a mixed bag. Perhaps our expectations were too high or perhaps we'd been spoiled by the Nexus 7 and iPad, but the Kindle Fire HD ?seemed?downright sluggish at times, lagging at odd moments.

We'll definitely take a much closer look at the new Kindles?though, and will refrain from judging it too harshly before we do. As a reminder, the 7-inch Kindle Fire HD?will cost $199, while the 8.9-inch version will go for $299. They both ship on Sept. 14.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.
