Struggling LA picks new mayor in low-profile race

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? City Hall is nearly broke ? and for many, is broken. The airport is an embarrassment. Freeways are clogged. And potholes, cracked sidewalks and untended trees infest many neighborhoods.

There are plenty of problems to solve in Los Angeles, but voters have been mostly indifferent about Tuesday's race for mayor. No single issue or candidate has seized their attention, much less their imaginations, in the contest to succeed outgoing Democrat Antonio Villaraigosa.

The likely outcome in the heavily Democratic city will send two City Hall regulars, Eric Garcetti, 42, and Wendy Greuel, 51, to a May 21 runoff, since it's unlikely any candidate will clear the majority needed to win outright Tuesday.

But in a race with little drama, a turnout that could dip below 20 percent could produce surprises, possibly opening the way for Democratic Councilwoman Jan Perry, 57, or former prosecutor Kevin James, 49, a Republican, to slip into the two-person runoff. Former technology executive Emanuel Pleitez, 30, is a longshot.

The latest polling suggests many voters are wavering.

The city could elect its first woman mayor (Greuel, the city controller, or Perry), the first openly gay one (James), or its first Jewish one (Perry or Garcetti, a city councilman). But the five leading candidates have dueled over issues more commonplace than of historical importance ? ailing schools, a looming deficit, 10.2 percent unemployment and how to stop rising pension and health care costs from snatching money from street repairs and other services.

"The same career politicians that caused our city's problems now promise they can solve them," says James, who's positioned himself as an outsider eager to upend the status quo at City Hall.

Villaraigosa's 2005 election made him Los Angeles' first Hispanic mayor since 1872, but this year's contest has followed a more familiar pattern. Angelenos are known to give local politics a collective shrug ? even turnout in Villaraigosa's closely contested primary in 2005 failed to reach 30 percent.

The mayor was re-elected in 2009 with a meager 152,000 votes, in a city of nearly 4 million people. He leaves office midyear.

The Los Angeles mayor presides over a budget that rises above $7 billion, but it's a notoriously weak office hemmed in by a powerful City Council. Unlike other big cities like New York, the Los Angeles mayor cannot directly appoint the head of schools or police.

Nikon Coolpix S3500 ships this month with 20MP CCD, lens-shift VR for $139

Nikon Coolpix S3500 ships this month with 20MP CCD, lensshift VR for $139

We don't tend to get excited about any CCD sensor-equipped point-and-shoot nowadays, but Nikon's Coolpix S3500 has at least one feature that we don't often see on a camera in this price range: lens-shift optical image stabilization, or Vibration Reduction (VR). Otherwise, this point-and-shoot's specifications are par for the course, and include a 20.1-megapixel CCD sensor, a 7x, f/3.4-6.4 optical zoom lens and a rather-weak QVGA (320 x 240-pixel) LCD. It can shoot 720p video, too, though we wouldn't expect industry-leading IQ. At $139, the S3500 is priced right for casual photographers, and its orange, pink, purple, red and silver color schemes should appease most digicam-hungry tweens. Hop past the break for some talking points from Nikon HQ.

Amber Harrison: Why I Love Public Weddings

Have you ever accidentally stumbled into a wedding? Caught a glimpse of a big white dress while on your way to the dry cleaner? Happening upon such an intimate moment can feel like seeing something you weren't meant to see. It is intriguing and exciting and a little bit forbidden.

But what if you were meant to see?

Public weddings -- a wedding taking place in a public location, open area or that is broadcast by the media -- seem to be growing in popularity and frequency. Who hasn't seen a televised proposal or wedding? There are even TV shows created to conclude with a marriage proposal. Why is that? Some say it is because couples want someone else to pay for the extravagant wedding of their dreams. Others say these are couples attention-starved or itching for five minutes of fame.

But I think there is more to it than that. Much more. I believe they are giving us a gift of love.

As I see it, a public wedding is the best love story in the world, being played out in plain daylight. It is an instant of tenderness. A hint of hope for the disheartened. It is a reminder to cherish existing love that has temporarily lost its sparkle. A flash of joy so intense it makes you believe anything is possible. And that is a remarkable gift. Because, let's be honest. Who couldn't use a little more love?

A wedding is meant to be a meaningful celebration with those closest to you, a time to rejoice in the beginning of a new family unit and a bright, boundless future.

Now imagine a wedding day filled with cameras clicking and flashing, boom mikes inches from your face and reporters scribbling as you recite your wedding vows. Complete strangers whooping and hollering at your first kiss. It certainly isn't for everyone, but those lovers brave enough to share their elation have the power to drag the rest of us out of the haze of day-to-day doldrums and rekindle the love that lives within even the most skeptical of hearts.

As the wedding and etiquette maven for Wedding Paper Divas, I get to experience the love of strangers every day. It is the very best part of my job. On Valentine's Day -- the most romantic day of the year -- I was lucky enough to attend four weddings. Three lovely couples were wed in front of reporters and camera crews at the iconic Empire State Building in stunning ceremonies designed by famed wedding designer, Preston Bailey. At the same time, only a few blocks away, another couple was married in the middle of Bryant Park in New York City. The Knot gave this couple their dream wedding -- and live-streamed the event across multiple online channels.

I had never met any of the couples whose nuptials I witnessed. Yet there I stood, basking in their joy, as each of the very public weddings was simultaneously publicized, broadcast and shared across the world. As I watched the ceremonies I couldn't help but be reminded of my own wedding day, and the flood of happy memories made me lament the fact that my husband was 3,000 miles away. You better believe I tried (unsuccessfully) to hold back tears at every one of those gorgeous weddings.

Whether an invited, remote or involuntary guest, there is still the matter of decorum and etiquette, which will very likely will stray from tradition. What if you wandered into a wedding in the middle of Times Square during rush hour? How would you respond? There are a few important things to keep in mind as you witness an exchange of vows:

Be respectful: The wedding may be on display for passersby to observe, but those involved are real people, in the midst of one of the most important moments of their lives.

Enjoy the moment: If you unexpectedly find yourself at the wedding of strangers, take a moment to drink it in and savor the sweet sentiment.

Share Responsibly: As a general rule, wedding guests are discouraged from posting pictures and experiences on social networks. Public weddings, on the other hand, are more likely to welcome social sharing. If you choose to share the experience, be on the lookout for an official wedding hashtag and avoid being disruptive or intrusive as you snap that Instagram-worthy picture.

If you are fortunate enough to witness a public exchange of love, remember it is exactly that. Not an invitation to crash a wedding. As a lover of love, I hope this trend of public weddings is a lasting one, and that it continues to uplift and delight us all.

Tesco Will Go Head To Head Against Amazon - Business Insider

Amazon/Screenshot

Amazon's Jeff Bezos

Tesco has hired one of Facebook?s most senior European executives and is launching a slew of online entertainment stores as it gears up for battle with Amazon.

The supermarket giant is preparing to launch two specialist ebook and music retail websites later this year, alongside the Blinkbox online movie store which it already owns.

Gavin Sathianathan, Facebook?s head of retail for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, will lead the books operation, Blinkboxbooks. Mark Bennett, a former EMI and Warner Music executive who now heads Sainsbury?s digital entertainment unit, will head up Blinkboxmusic.

Tesco bought an 80pc stake in the Blinkbox film and TV site in 2011, in what was widely interpreted as a defensive move against the likes of Amazon and Apple, whose own movie services were rapidly eating into Tesco?s share of the entertainment market.

Blinkbox customers can buy or rent new movies by downloading them over the internet, in a similar way to movie rental services like Netflix or Amazon?s Lovefilm. However, Blinkbox?s sales model allows it to offer recent box office hits, such as Skyfall, much earlier than those rivals, and even ahead of pay-TV operations like BSkyB.

Tesco has done little with the East London-based technology firm in the nearly two years it has owned it, but is now poised to spring into action.

The three Blinkbox retail sites will sit separately from Tescos? main online store and will only carry subtle Tesco branding. However, the supermarket will advertise the sites heavily in store and use them to ensure that customers in search of specialist online sites for books, music, films and TV box sets continue buying from the Tesco empire instead of falling into the habit of shopping for entertainment products elsewhere. It will target the millions of customers who still haven?t started shopping online in a big way.

In doing so, Tesco hopes to stop the steady march of customers going to Amazon for just one sort of item only to turn to the mammoth online retailer for a large range of household goods. That drift has already become ingrained in shopping habits in the US, where many customers regularly buy ordinary items such as nappies or cleaning products from Amazon, as well as luxury items like books and electrical goods.

Although Amazon far outranks Tesco in online sales, the supermarket?s chief executive Phil Carke has said he wants Tesco to become the world?s biggest ?multi-channel retailer? - the name given to stores that combine online retail websites with bricks-and-mortar shops.

Michael Comish, chef executive and founder of Blinkbox, said: ?Tesco is already the third largest retailer in the world, and we will have launched three new digital entertainment businesses by the end of the year, headed by some of Britain?s brightest digital minds. This is the beginning of a big journey.?

He added: ?I don?t think you compete head on against Amazon. I think you compete around Amazon and leverage the strengths you have... Amazon doesn?t have 2,000 stores. Amazon doesn?t deliver to within the hour. There?s a lot which Tesco has which customers value.?

News of Tesco?s online expansion plans come as the supermarket prepares to launch a Clubcard TV channel, underpinned by Blinkbox?s technology. The new television station will be available to members of Tesco?s ClubCard loyalty scheme, free of charge, and will offer a mix of archive films and television shows.

Initially it will only be available over the internet, but Tesco is in discussions with satellite and cable broadcasters about turning it into a mainstream television channel. The supermarket will use detailed information about viewers, collected through its ClubCard scheme, to serve up carefully tailored adverts to users on an almost household by household basis.

?They?ll be the most targeted TV adverts in the world,? said Mr Comish.
