Returning to the Garden | Raising a Family on a Budget

WW II poster promoting gardening (from the National Agricultural Library)

WW II poster promoting gardening (from the National Agricultural Library)

I grew up in a family that always had a huge garden.? I would come home from school and pick strawberries and then all summer there were tomatoes, peppers, beets, squash, beans?you name it!? So when my husband & I bought our house I wanted a garden.? The down side, I had a new baby, poor soil, and bit off way more than I could chew. ?Now here I am 5 years later, another baby on the way and trying to keep this year?s garden (the first attempt since the disaster 5 years ago) practical.

The garden that we plant, needs to produce enough for our family, with a little extra for sharing or canning, but not so much that we become overwhelmed. ?Even more so, it needs to remain small enough so that I do not lose my mind trying to maintain a garden while I?m 9 months pregnant and with a newborn at home.

We decided last August, when the big oak tree in our yard fell during a storm, that now that we have light in the yard, it would be ideal to put in a few fruit trees, so that is our big time/money investment for the garden this year. ?Following that, it is replacing a blueberry bush (or possibly 2) that were decimated during the same tree incident.

I am trying to be realistic and only plan 1 small vegetable garden, but it is really tough when I want to be able to grow all of the beautiful produce for making baby food, but the more I think about it, the more I come to terms with just how impractical that would be this year.

I like the concept of the Victory Gardens from the WWII era.

Encouraged by the federal government to supplement scarce fruit and vegetable supplies, Americans planted more than 20 million victory gardens. Those gardens produced an estimated 40% of all vegetables eaten nationally during the later war years.

The practice of growing a garden to supply most of one?s own fruit and vegetables is regaining popularity today. Reasons vary from wanting to eat more locally produced food, to environmental concerns, as well as wanting to save money in a difficult economy.

If I keep that as our focus, producing only what our family will consume, with a little extra to preserve, then that should help to keep me on track with the planning and implementation of this year?s garden.

I think I?ll return to the garden planner for a little longer, and will share my progress tomorrow.

Advertising Property Management Company Online: Pay-Per-Click ...

advertising property management company - pay per clickToday at Fourandhalf, we are going to help you become an educated consumer when it comes to advertising your property management company on the Internet. The first thing you need to do when choosing how to market your business on the Internet is to identify your goal or purpose. Marketers often focus on a number of things such as exposure, branding and reputation. The bottom line for most of us is growth. If you are looking to employ digital marketing services, you probably want to grow your business.

Why is the Internet the right place for growth?

When you use the Internet for marketing, you use a pull strategy instead of a push strategy. As property managers, you focus on a specific segment of the population. You try to reach people who own homes that are not owner-occupied. You look for people who manage properties themselves as well as reluctant landlords and property investors. An example of a push strategy would be a television commercial. You pay a lot of money to get a commercial on television, which gives you exposure to a lot of people you don?t want, and cannot possibly target all of ?the people you really want to reach. So for businesses like property management companies, this is the wrong method.

The Internet uses pull marketing. You cater your content and information to people who are already searching for property management in your town. You get targeted access to people who are searching for questions you can answer, such as how to rent a house, how much rent to charge, etc. There are different avenues of digital marketing that can be included in your strategy. One such avenue is pay-per-click.

Pay-Per-Click

Pay-per-click advertising is a quick shot of adrenaline for your business. You tell Google that you are willing to pay $2 to $5 per click to be on the front page for particular keywords. For example, if you?re a San Francisco property manager, you want to be listed near the front anytime someone searches for ?San Francisco property management.?

Having a strategic landing page will help you tremendously with pay-per-click. You want to make sure that when your potential prospects click on the company listing that you paid for, they will go to a specific landing page. Don?t send them to the generic front page of your website. The landing page should outline the advantages of your company specific to the customer your ad is trying to reach. We always recommend having a brief video that pitches your business, as well as a phone number and a ?Contact Us? form or button. The landing page alone will increase your conversion by up to 50 percent.

The company you hire to help you with pay-per-click needs to understand your business and the keywords that equal money to you. Your digital marketing company also needs to understand and respect your budget. You should get to determine whether you want to spend $10 a day or $1,500 a month. The beauty of pay-per-click is that you can adjust your budget as you go. It gets you real clients, but it requires an investment from you. You need to hire a pay-per-click company to manage your campaign, and you also need to pay Google or Facebook or whatever platform you choose.

Jets name Mornhinweg, Thurman as coordinators

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:29 p.m. ET Jan. 24, 2013

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) - New York Jets coach Rex Ryan has officially announced the expected hirings of Marty Mornhinweg as his offensive coordinator and Dennis Thurman as the team's defensive coordinator.

Ryan also announced Thursday that David Lee was hired as the team's quarterbacks coach, replacing Matt Cavanaugh, and Tim McDonald will be the Jets' defensive backs coach.

Mornhinweg, who replaced the fired Tony Sparano, was an assistant for 10 years with the Philadelphia Eagles, including the last seven as offensive coordinator.

Thurman was promoted from defensive backs coach, and replaces Mike Pettine, who was hired as Buffalo's defensive coordinator.

Lee, most recently the Bills' quarterbacks coach, played a key role in establishing Miami's wildcat offense a few years ago. McDonald, a former NFL safety, was Fresno State's secondary coach last season.

Powerful prose stored in error-free DNA

Douglas Heaven, reporter

(Image: Francis Miller/Time & Life Pictures/Getty)

It is one of the most iconic speeches of all time, and now it has been immortalised in a very unusual way. A snippet of Martin Luther King's 1963 "I have a dream" speech has been stored in the alphabet of DNA.

Nick Goldman at the European Bioinformatics Institute in Hinxton, UK, and colleagues synthesised DNA to encode an eclectic mix of information in its adenine, thymine, cytosine and guanine components. They used these "letters" to record an audio file of 26 seconds of King's speech, all 154 of Shakespeare's sonnets, a digital photo of their laboratory and the famous paper in which James Watson and Francis Crick?first described the double-helical structure of DNA.

The team built on previous DNA-encoding techniques by adding error correction, allowing content to be retrieved with 100 per cent accuracy.

DNA-based memory is sought after because DNA can last for thousands of years without special storage, other than being somewhere cold, dark and dry. In theory, DNA can encode roughly the capacity of 100 billion DVDs per gram of single-stranded DNA, making it potentially useful for storing the vast amounts of archived data produced by places such as CERN.

North Korea threatens new nuclear test 'aimed' at US

North Korea reacted to the UN Security Council's unanimous vote to condemn the North's recent satellite launch by announcing that it would soon carry out its third nuclear test.

Two days after the United Nations condemned North Korea with further sanctions for its?December rocket launch, the secretive country vowed to respond with a nuclear weapons test aimed at its ?enemy,? the United States.

The United Nations Security Council ? including North Korea?s closest ally and biggest trading partner, China ? voted unanimously on Tuesday to strengthen sanctions against North Korea for its Dec. 12 long-range rocket launch, which violated previous agreements with the UN.

When the launch took place last month, North Korea stated its intentions were entirely peaceful, and that it was exercising its ?right to use space? for peaceful purposes.

Today, however, North Korea?s tune seemed to change. "We are not disguising the fact that the various satellites and long-range rockets that we will fire and the high-level nuclear test we will carry out are targeted at the United States," North Korea's National Defense Commission said, Reuters reports, citing the state news agency KCNA.

The commission described the UN Security Council as ?a marionette of the US,? and said the Security Council ?should apologize for its crime of seriously encroaching upon the independence of a sovereign state ... and repeal all the unreasonable 'resolutions' at once.?

If North Korea were to carry out a nuclear test ?of a higher level,? as noted today, it would be the country?s third. Its previous tests were conducted in 2006 and 2009, ?both times just weeks after being punished with UN sanctions for launching long-range rockets,? according to Fox News.

But this time, some international observers believe North Korea?s technological ability to conduct nuclear testing has advanced. ?Bloomberg reports the country has ?enough weaponized plutonium for four to eight basic nuclear weapons,? according to estimates by the Stanford University nuclear scientist Siegfried Hecker, who visited North Korea?s atomic facilities, including one for atomic uranium-enrichment, in 2010.

The Associated Press reports that North Korea may be aiming to use "a device made from highly enriched uranium, which is easier to miniaturize than the plutonium bombs it tested in 2006 and 2009,? according to Cheong Seong-chang, an analyst at the private Sejong Institute in South Korea. Further tests are necessary before North Korea can create an atomic weapon small enough to launch as a warhead attached to a long-range missile, according to the Associated Press.

Leader Kim Jong-un may be trying to bolster his legitimacy at home and on the world stage by continuing his father?s ?military first? policies.

?North Korea has unfortunately resorted to their classic play of brinkmanship,? Huh Moon-young, director of the Center for North Korean Studies at the state-run Korea Institute for National Unification in Seoul, told Bloomberg. ?In this totalitarian regime, the dictatorship is maintained not through winning the hearts of the impoverished public with money, but with consolidation through a show of military might.?

international response to North Korea?s threat today was quick.?according to the Telegraph.?The US special envoy to North Korea, Glyn Davies, urged the country and Mr. Kim not to move forward with the test, calling it a potential ?mistake and a missed opportunity.?

The transition team for the incoming South Korean government, due to be sworn in on Friday, has also appealed to Pyongyang not to take any steps that would aggravate tensions in the region, while Japan is to launch a new spy satellite on Sunday with the express task of monitoring missile and nuclear tests in North Korea.

China, North Korea's sole significant ally, even [came] down against Pyongyang's intransigence, with Xi Jinping, the next president, telling a visiting delegation of politicians from South Korea that he opposes the regime developing nuclear arms or any weapons of mass destruction.

Hong Lei, a foreign ministry spokesman added: "All relevant parties should refrain from action that might escalate the situation in the region."

The New York Times notes that North Korea?s threat ?marked the boldest challenge its new, untested leader, Kim Jong-un, has posed at both his country?s longtime foe, the United States, and its last remaining major ally, China, and rattled governments in Northeast Asia that are undergoing sensitive transitions of power.?

Some believe the nuclear test could occur as soon as February, reports Reuters, in order to coincide with neighboring South Korea?s President-elect Park Geun-hye taking power on Feb. 25. Another possibility is timing the test with the birthday celebration of Mr. Kim?s late father, Kim Jong-il, on Feb. 16.

?North Korea can conduct a nuclear test as soon as its leadership makes up its mind,??Army Col. Wi Yong-seob, deputy spokesman of the Defense Ministry of South Korea, told The New York Times today.

An editorial in the UAE?s Khaleej Times notes that recent rising international tensions ?have again dimmed the possibility of an amicable resolution to the cold war on the Korean Peninsula.?

The right way to deal with North Korea is by engaging the country?s leadership in dialogue. Kim Jong-un, just like his father, wants to use his country?s nuclear programme to get concessions from the international community and ensure his regime?s survival, amid a hostile environment. Neither sanctions nor threats will be effective in containing North Korea?s nuclear programme. So it?s about time that the international community revives the stalled six-nation talks to deal with the issue of the Korean Peninsula?s denuclearisation.

But North Korea seems to be rebuffing diplomatic channels or the revival of six-nation talks. "Settling accounts with the US needs to be done with force, not with words, as it regards jungle law as the rule of its survival," the Democratic People's Republic of Korea said in today?s statement.

Reuters notes that the US may not be the only target of North Korea?s ire. "North Korea will have felt betrayed by China for agreeing to the latest UN resolution and they might be targeting [China] as well [with this statement]," said Lee Seung-yeol, senior research fellow at Ewha Institute of Unification Studies in Seoul.

But not everyone is taken aback by North Korea?s move today. ?Over the years they?ve said the same thing again and again,? Daniel Pinkston, North East Asia Deputy Project Director for the International Crisis Group told Time. ?People say North Koreans are very unpredictable or whatever, but this is very predictable.?

Wall Street flat near five-year highs

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks were little changed near five-year highs on Tuesday as investors held back from making large bets ahead of earnings from key tech companies.

Both the Dow and S&P 500 closed at their highest levels so far in this earnings season, with the gains largely coming on better-than-expected results. But despite bullish statements from major companies, many investors are worried economic uncertainty in the fourth quarter hurt earnings and revenues.

Weaker-than-expected economic data had little impact on stocks. Existing-home sales unexpectedly fell in December, dropping 1 percent, according to the National Association of Realtors. Analysts were looking for a rise of 1.2 percent.

Recently Apple Inc and Intel Corp gave weak outlooks, calling the tech sector' outlook into question. Three tech companies are due to report after the market's close: Google Inc , International Business Machines and Texas Instruments .

"Markets are quiet today with many investors taking a wait-and-see approach to tonight's tech earnings," said Douglas DePietro, managing director at Evercore Partners in New York. "There's still room for us to rise from here, but right now most of the action is in specific stocks."

Four Dow components reported early on Tuesday, and three rose on the results. Insurer Travelers Cos was the stand-out, climbing 3.4 percent to $78.90 as the S&P 500's biggest percentage gainer after it forecast higher premiums across its business.

DuPont

, the largest U.S. chemical company by market capitalization, reported revenue that was ahead of Wall Street expectations, while Verizon Communications Inc also posted revenue that beat forecasts.

Shares of DuPont were up 0.6 percent at $47.24 while Verizon rose 0.3 percent to $42.67.

On the downside, Johnson & Johnson , the diversified health company, fell 0.5 percent to $72.87 after forecasting 2013 earnings below expectations.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 6.07 points, or 0.04 percent, at 13,643.63. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 1.56 points, or 0.10 percent, at 1,484.42. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 2.52 points, or 0.08 percent, at 3,132.19.

Monday was a market holiday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the United States. President Barack Obama at his inauguration for a second term on Monday called for aggressive action on climate change, economic equality and the federal budget.

Markets have recently been pressured by uncertainty stemming from Washington about the federal debt limit and spending cuts that could hamper U.S. growth.

Republican leaders in the House of Representatives said they aim to pass on Wednesday a nearly four-month extension of the U.S. debt limit, allowing the government to borrow enough to meet its obligations during that period.

Overall, S&P 500 fourth-quarter earnings rose 2.5 percent, according to Thomson Reuters data.

U.S. shares of Research in Motion jumped 8.2 percent to $17.13 a day after its chief executive said the company may consider strategic alliances with other companies after the launch of devices powered by RIM's new BlackBerry 10 operating system.
