Law of Attraction/Positive thinking....*May trigger* : Borderline ...

Thanks for all your comments - I knew I would find some people who agreed on this site since we are the ones being told by these imbeciles that all we need to do is think happy thoughts and we will be cured! One person even said to me - after I told her I have a mental illness - that if I've had negative experiences then I should just let them go, they are in the past! I'm sorry but what an absolute ignorant fool. I know a lot of people make judgements when it comes to mental illness and they like to think it's not a real thing, but I don't consider those people to have any intelligence. I tried not being rude to anyone on that forum but I really want to go back and tell them what idiots they are. I know it won't do any good though. I had really thought that they were good people fighting for a good cause - but how can I become involved with people who think this way?

One person said it's just fact - it's natural law, the same as gravity. Except gravity was proved scientifically, the LOA was not! And this rubbish about like attracts like, is that actually true? Do these people not think about what they're saying? Since when in science has positive ever attracted positive? It's scientific fact that opposites attract! The proof is there with magnets. If like attracts like then how do they explain that one?? I'd love to take this argument to them but I am seriously worn out...thinking about the whole thing affected me so badly that I wasn't able to get out of bed today until 4pm because I felt so terrible and angry that people can think this way...

The thing is that whenever it works for one person - they ask for something and it appears magically - that's proof that the LOA works. But who says that's the explanation? Maybe they are on a higher level of thought, as I believe many people are. They might be sending out signals to people telepathically, but I can tell you that not one thing I have asked for have I ever gotten. And then when it doesn't work they have an answer for that too - it's because you had doubt or you didn't truly believe you'd get it. What a load of bull! For people like us, our brains develop defense mechanisms (doubt) when we hope for something. If we didn't have the doubt and we fully expected to get whatever we wanted and then didn't, we'd be absolutely devastated. Doubt is a way of protecting ourselves from the possibility of things not going our way and it's healthy to have some doubt and to say, "I'd really like this to happen, but if it doesn't then it's ok!" But apparently there's no room for doubt with the LOA.

Nelgit, I agree that people think their lives are great because of their positive mindset. But their answer is that if you grew up being abused or in a dysfunctional family then that's because of the negative energy surrounding you and yes it is very offensive for people to suggest this. How can they say that a child who is abused is probably carrying around negative energy and they created the abuse...what about the abuser? Are they abusing the child because they're attracted to their negative energy? Ridiculous! And then for that child to have a good life they must start thinking positively when they've been betrayed by someone they thought they could trust.

Passenger, I do agree with you that you get what you give. But these people are claiming that even if you are kind and never harm anyone else and take care of others, if you have any negative thoughts or energy then bad things will keep happening to you! So it doesn't matter what you do in life, if you are negative then you won't succeed!

And yes, they don't seem to get the concept of this whole book with the authors making tons of money in the process. Well, how can you believe these people? They say it works because they're successful - but they're successful selling this crap information! And I do also see how things can get better for people when they are positive and the more good things that happen to them, the better they feel. But they don't see it the other way - when you haven't been lucky and things haven't gone your way and every knock takes away a bit of positive energy from you. You can't just make it grow back!

There are books out there that explain how this law works in a non materialistic way, but many theories have been disproved. Without enough evidence there's no reason to believe it. And I am evidence to myself because I have tried. But these fools will tell me it was my fault that things didn't go my way even when I did start thinking positively. I tried very hard and the only reason I'm back here now is because good things didn't happen. You lose your faith in it and you can't keep being positive when bad things keep happening. I think I'd be in a really good place now if I'd gotten all the things I asked for. And if there's any truth in vibrational energy, then why did changing my name to something more "positive" not have any effect?

These people say it's not so much that people are getting what they deserve, but that they are attracting negativity if they are negative. But it's not right. I can understand it for people who are just not nice people and therefore get nothing nice in return, but I think there is a lot of evidence showing that bad things happen to good people and good things happen to bad people. Why do you think there are constantly idiots winning the lottery? And what about celebrities who get illnesses...most of those people have happy lives. Look at Kylie Minogue. Is someone going to say that she got cancer from thinking about it too much? Or that she had a negative phase and attracted it to her?? And I suppose they'll say her recovery proves that being positive works! You cannot win with them, you know?

And you know, maybe if the people who started preaching this stuff were doing it for free so that EVERYONE could be happy and not for their own gains and to make money then their words might have some credibility. But there's a lot of doubt created when money is involved.

That Dave Murphy video made me giggle...he has the right idea! The difference is that I'd never just say it's ridiculous without at least trying it. For months I envisioned myself healthy and happy and thin and I saw myself winning a songwriting competition. I went through a few months of hope because this was when I first found out about this stuff and started doing research. I did everything to clear my negative energy including clearing my chakras. I even went on to an online gambling site, sure I was going to win some money and instead ended up losing ?70. But of course, despite all the evidence I can give these people they will still tell me that it's a natural law, it DOES work and if it didn't work for me then it's something I did wrong. I'm so fed up with it.

I would like everyone to imagine a world where no one attracts anything good into their lives if they have any doubts or confidence in themselves. How many suicides would we have? You'd get people trying and failing and even stable people would lose hope for their lives. It's simply not true though. You've got people who have success but who are depressed and people who are positive but can deal with the set backs even when there are many.

I am just so angry about it and I feel like I now have to walk away from these people who I believed were a supportive community who I could turn to for help in fighting against everything that's wrong with the world. But they choose to believe "The Secret" and how can I have respect for people like that?
