Marine Industries Association of South Florida Makes a Splash at ...

Fort Lauderdale, FL ?- The Marine Industries Association of South Florida successfully played host September 17th, to 26 industry notables representing 12 industry associations interested in promoting professionalism within the yachting industry.

The invite only luncheon, held at the prestigious Monaco Yacht Club, included international associations and dignitaries that have a vested interest in improving the economic opportunities of the global yachting market. An industry wide code of ethics, equitable value proposition, and enhanced product merchandising were all discussed in a vibrant exchange with an international perspective.

MIASF Executive Director, Carlos Vidueira, expressed his thoughts on the assembly, ?It was inspiring to sit and discuss such a rapidly evolving topic with such an esteemed international group of industry professionals and the associations that they represent. Through this type of international cooperation, I am convinced that our industry will overcome its challenges, adapt to a modern mindset and ultimately meet the needs of the yachting market.?

Based upon the success of this luncheon, The Marine Industries Association of South Florida will be hosting a follow up meeting in conjunction with the International Superyacht Society and the United States Superyacht Association on Saturday, October 27th of this year, at their own Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.

The MIASF is a not-for-profit trade organization created in 1962 to promote and protect the sound growth of the marine industry in South Florida for the benefit and education of its members, the community and the environment. The MIASF is the owner of the world?s largest boat show, The Fort Lauderdale International boat Show, founded in 1960.

FirstService Merges Three Residential Management/Preservation ...

September 27, 2012

By Scott Baltic, Contributing Editor

Jim Warren, FirstService Residential Realty?s chief marketing officer

As the housing market lurches its way to a presumably inevitable recovery, FirstService Corp., of Toronto, one of the world?s largest property managers, has merged its FirstService Residential Realty, TenantAccess and PropertyAccess subsidiaries, the company announced Tuesday. The combined entity will operate as FirstService Residential Realty, based in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

The reorganization reportedly makes FirstService Residential Realty the largest provider of ?complete, end-to-end single-family property management services in North America,? although the company is also heavily involved with multi-family.

Jim Warren, FirstService Residential Realty?s chief marketing officer, told Commercial Property Executive that roughly a quarter to a third of the company?s approximately 25,000 units (homes, apartment units and lots) under management are multi-family units.

The company offers services ranging from acquisition, market and property assessments, leasing and evictions through to disposition to such clients as property owners, government-sponsored enterprises, banks, institutional investors and residents.

Greg Tolander, formerly chief operating officer of FirstService Corp. subsidiary Field Asset Services, has been appointed CEO of FirstService Residential Realty.? Danielle Cooney, who previously served as vice president of national operations for FirstService Residential Realty, was named chief operating officer, and Warren, formerly senior vice president with TenantAccess and PropertyAccess, was named chief marketing officer.

?We are going to get extremely aggressive in the multi-family area,? Warren told CPE, and explicitly not just in terms of distressed properties. By leveraging the merged company?s connections within its corporate parent, including those with FirstService subsidiary Colliers International, he said, FirstService Residential Realty aims to provide ?all things rental.?

?This is absolutely a strategic move,? Warren added, noting that ?there is a horizon? on the current market for services relating to foreclosures and REO, as the nation?s shadow inventory of housing shrinks.

Bolstering the rationale behind FirstService?s move is an announcement just last week from the National Association of Realtors. On Sept. 19, the NAR reported that distressed sales (which combine foreclosure sales and short sales) accounted for 22 percent of August home sales nationwide, down from 24 percent the previous month and from 31 percent 12 months prior.

In honor of Women?s Health and Fitness Day?

Easy Health Tips: The Best Things to Do For Your Body!

Discover a workout you dig! You know, the one you look forward
to not because you can time it with The Bachelor, but because it?s actually fun. University of Michigan research shows that women who exercise because it makes them feel happier or more energized are more likely to keep it up than women who work out just to look better.

STOP? with the fad, cleansing, and detox diets! Beyond wreaking havoc on your metabolism, they make your hair do really bad things. That?s because your mane is one of the body?s fastest-growing tissues, but since it?s also nonessential (unlike, say, brain cells), your locks are the first to go if your body lacks nutrients. And once your body is done shedding its more expendable parts, it?s not long before the rest of you is in deep doo, too.

STOP? drinking your calories! Between 1995 and 2002, the number of calories Americans swigged each day more than doubled?and those from sugary quenchers like soda, fruit drinks, and alcohol quadrupled. That?s a whole lot of Jamba Juice, people.

You snooze, you win! Studies show that power naps can help you kill stress and recharge; just don?t doze for more than a half hour. After 30 minutes, your body enters the deep stages of sleep, and studies show that if you wake up right before deep sleep, you?ll feel more refreshed.

Don?t just think you can do it? now you can! You?ll increase your self-esteem if your ?can do? attitude is based on real skills. Learn how to unclog the toilet, file your taxes, or hang those Ikea shelves.

Visualized Inside Rovio's HQ

When in Helsinki, or rather Espoo, there's only one thing left to do after stopping by Nokia's glass House -- visit Rovio's HQ. That's right, the company made famous (and filthy rich) by flinging fowl is just a short walk away from Elop and co.'s waterside domain. And, in a bit of perfect timing, we were graciously welcomed into the gaming outfit's office on the eve of its Bad Piggies launch. As you might expect and hope, the walls, doors, floors, couches, desks, soft drinks and even bottles of hand lotion are adorned in all things Angry Birds. There's even a mock-up experience store -- populated with a variety of branded paraphernalia -- sitting pretty in pale green just outside a bank of cubicles. It's everything we ever imagined it to be. But don't just take our words for it. You can check it out for yourself in a video after the break. And now, we're really Finnish(ed).

RLPC-Bankers pitch debt for AA and Saga sales or IPOs

LONDON (Reuters) - Bankers are pitching multibillion pound financing packages to back the potential sale or flotation of 107-year-old motoring services firm the AA and over-50's insurance and travel company Saga, banking sources said on Tuesday.

The two companies are owned by Acromas, which appointed Ernst & Young to carry out vendor due diligence last week as its private equity owners Charterhouse, CVC and Permira explore valuations for the companies as two separate entities.

The AA could be sold or floated on the stock market for as much as 5 billion pounds ($8.10 billion) while Saga has been valued at around 3 billion pounds, banking sources said.

Acromas was formed in 2007 though the 6.2 billion pound private equity-backed merger of AA and Saga, which was funded with a 4.8 billion pound leveraged loan at the peak of the buyout boom.

Arrangers Barclays and Mizuho tried to syndicate the buyout loan but were unable to do so after the market collapsed. Both banks were forced to hold the debt although the business has performed well in the interim.

SEPTEMBER PITCHES

Bankers pitched new debt packages to the AA and Saga in September to cover either a sale or IPO. An acquisition would require debt for either a corporate strategic buyer or a private equity-led buyout and floatations usually require either pre- or post-IPO financing.

The debt packages are expected to include loans and bonds and could be denominated in sterling and euros due to their size.

"Banks are pitching financing for two standalone businesses. Both the loan and bond market would need to be accessed for such a large deal and there isn't the capacity to raise all the debt in pounds. Euros would be needed as well," a banker said.

A sale of AA would need around 3 billion pounds of debt and Saga's debt financing would be smaller, bankers said.

Sale or flotation of the businesses would allow Acromas to return cash to its private equity owners.

A decision is not pressing as Acromas's loans are not due to be repaid until 2015. Other options include refinancing Acromas's existing debt or a fresh capital injection from a new investor. A decision is expected by mid-2013.

"As we approach the first phase of our debt maturity in 2015, shareholders of the business will inevitably want to consider their options," a spokesman for Acromas said.

The euro zone crisis has reduced banks' ability to underwrite large financing packages and difficult debt market conditions are prompting financing discussions on jumbo buyouts at an earlier stage than before the credit crisis.

Early financing discussions have also been seen recently on the potential 8 billion pound sale of UK retailer M&S, which would require a 4 billion pound debt financing.

British cleric to be extradited to US on terror charges

Four terrorists wanted on charges in the U.S. have lost their case at the European Court of Human Rights and will be extradicted to the US after years of legal battles. ITV's Lucy Manning reports

The European Court of Human Rights gave final approval on Monday for the extradition of one of Britain's most radical Islamist clerics and four others to the United States, where they face terrorism charges.

The decision caps a long legal battle and means Abu Hamza al-Masri could be extradited within weeks. Britain's Home Office, or interior ministry, said it would hand over the suspects "as quickly as possible."

The Egyptian-born al-Masri, 54, filed an appeal, along with the four other suspects, after the court in Strasbourg authorized Britain to transfer him to the United States on charges he supported al-Qaida and aided a fatal kidnapping in Yemen.

Al-Masri, who could face a sentence of more than 100 years in an ultrasecure "Supermax" prison, had argued such treatment would contravene Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which prohibits inhumane and degrading treatment.

"Today the Grand Chamber decided to reject the request. This means that the Chamber judgment of April 10, 2012, is now final," the court said in a statement.

The decision also concerned appeals lodged by four other defendants, Babar Ahmad, Syed Tahla Ahsan, Adel Abdul Bary and Khaled Al-Fawwaz, all of whom have been detained in Britain pending extradition to the United States.

A Home Office spokesman said that "we will work to ensure that the individuals are handed over to the U.S. authorities as quickly as possible."

The family of Ahmad called on the government to halt the extradition process, saying British prosecutors were in possession of the material that forms the basis of the U.S. indictment and should pursue the case in Britain.

Al-Masri is one of the most radical Islamists in Britain, a country he has attacked for its support of U.S.-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The one-eyed radical with a metal hook for a hand has praised the September 11, 2001, attacks, and was once a preacher at a North London mosque but was later convicted of inciting murder and racial hatred. He is being held in a British jail.

He was indicted in 2004 by a federal grand jury in New York, accused of providing material support to al-Qaida and of involvement in a hostage-taking in Yemen in 1998 in which four hostages -- three Britons and one Australian -- were killed.

He was also accused of providing material support to al-Qaida by trying to set up a training camp for fighters in Oregon and of trying to organize support for the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Senator Brown Backs Bill to Protect U.S. Call Center Jobs

Sept 19, 2012 -- U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, is throwing his weight behind a new law to protect call center jobs.

On Wednesday, Brown announced he is supporting legislation that could help keep jobs in the U.S.? including the 198,000 jobs in Ohio ? by requiring that consumers be notified when their calls are being transferred abroad. The idea is that by requiring companies to disclose when their calls are being transferred abroad, businesses could be encouraged to keep their call centers jobs here in the United States.

The new law also would prevent companies that send call center jobs overseas from getting federal grants and loans.

"We should reward American workers and American companies that remain loyal to creating jobs in our communities," Brown said, in a statement.

He cites estimates from the Communications Workers of America that Ohio saw a net loss of 2,330 call center jobs between 2008 and 2011.

Known as the United States Call Center Worker and Consumer Protection Act of 2012, the law would:

? Require companies to disclose to callers when their calls are transferred abroad;

? Make businesses that move call center jobs overseas ineligible for federal grants and loans;

? Direct the Department of Labor to make a public list of such companies;

? Employers would remain on list for three years after each relocation; and

? Require agencies, including Department of Defense, to give preference to U.S. employers that do not appear on the list.

"Most Ohioans that have had to call a major company for a service repair or to get an answer about their cable bill have ended up speaking with a worker in a different time zone, on a different continent," Brown said. "When companies send call center jobs overseas, they don?t just frustrate consumers?they hurt our economy as well. With thousands of Ohioans looking for work, it just doesn?t make sense to ship these jobs overseas."

According to a Communications Workers of America analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data, 198,450 Ohioans were employed in call center occupations such as switchboard operators, telephone operators, bill collectors and customer service representatives.

Education strike first of many challenges for Chicago mayor

CHICAGO ? The grueling teachers strike is over. Now comes the hard part for Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

As he pushes ahead on his promise to reform the city's underperforming classrooms, he faces several daunting tasks: slashing an estimated $1 billion budget deficit, confronting a woefully underfunded employee pension system and finding money for the pay raises that settled the first teacher walkout in a generation. He hasn't ruled out school closings and tax increases, both of which would be hugely unpopular.

Waiting in the wings are other unions, including police and firefighters, whose labor contracts have expired and who no doubt took notes as the teachers stood up to the former White House chief of staff with the fearsome reputation.

The strike, which idled more than 350,000 children for more than a week, was the first time Emanuel was forced to make serious concessions since leaving Washington last year. But the challenges he faces aren't unlike those confronting mayors in New York, Baltimore and elsewhere as they grapple with financial fallout from the Great Recession and urgent demands to improve public education.

"Union concessions won't get him there," said Ralph Martire, executive director of the Chicago-based Center for Tax and Budget Accountability. "And they can't cut their way to a better education system."

As he welcomed children back to school, Emanuel nodded at the difficulties ahead: "We have other tough things to do."

The mayor said he's made a good start by cutting $500 million from the district's central office and crafting a three-year teacher contract that will cost $75 million a year compared with $130 million a year for the last contract. But he would not elaborate on reports that the city may be pressured to raise taxes on cigarettes and amusements, and close dozens of schools and move more rapidly toward cheaper charter schools.

The day after schools reopened, he appeared in a privately funded TV ad emphasizing the achievements in the deal with the union: a longer school day and year, the ability for principals to hire their own teachers and a new teacher-evaluation system based in part on student test scores.

But Martire said the financial troubles are more deeply rooted. Many were inherited from former Mayor Richard M. Daley, who avoided a strike in his more than two decades in office but at a price. When City Hall took control over Chicago's schools in 1995, the pension system was almost fully funded.

"This is a crisis of their own doing," Martire said.

In arguing for better job security provisions, Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis warned that the city would close more than 100 of its 600 schools "as soon as the ink is dry" on the new contract. City Hall dismissed the number as a rumor but acknowledged that closing schools will be under consideration.

As he looks forward, Emanuel also faces questions about his aggressive style, which seemed to galvanize the teachers.

Early in his term, he rescinded a 4 percent teacher raise and said students were being shorted. Then he tried to bypass the union to negotiate directly with individual schools over a longer day ? an approach that may have ultimately fired up unions throughout Chicago.

Glacial youth therapy for the Scandinavian landscape

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? The high elevation flat surfaces characteristic of the Norwegian landscape are in geologically terms young, according to a paper in Nature Geoscience.

In a paper recently published in Nature Geoscience, researchers from the University of Bergen (UiB) and ETH Zurich have demonstrated that ice sheets have extensively shaped the fjords of Norway for the last 2.8 million years.

"However, the massive sediment record deposited offshore Norway during this period tells us a more complex story," explains Postdoctoral Fellow Philippe Steer at UiB's Department of Earth Science and the first author of the paper. "Ice sliding during glacial periods also resulted in eroding the present-day flattish surfaces that form the high-elevation parts of the Scandinavian landscape."

Contradicting previous views

The conclusion of this new study by Steer and his collaborators in Bergen and Zurich contradicts previously accepted views for Scandinavian geodynamics, where high-elevation parts of the landscape were left almost untouched by the repeated ice sheets.

"The origin and fate of the western Scandinavian landscapes under the repeated ice sheets of the last 2.8 million years has been a highly debated scientific topic for a hundred years," says Professor Ritske S. Huismans, head of the research project and a co-author of the paper. "In our contribution we have, for the first time, managed to demonstrate that the glaciers and ice sheets have eroded away both the Scandinavian fjords and flat high-elevation surfaces during the past glacial times. This supports the idea that the mountain range in western Scandinavian as seen today is a remnant of the more than 400 million years old Caledonian mountain range and has been at high elevations ever since."

The researchers believe that this new conceptual model of topographic glacial imprint may also apply to other high-latitude landscapes, such as the one in Greenland.

"This discovery was made possible by linking two fields, onshore and offshore geology that are usually studied separately. Because onshore erosion results ultimately in offshore sediments, it is fundamental to understand the past sediment record to assess the history of Scandinavian landscapes," Huismans explains. "Our research indicates that erosion must also have occurred in the areas above the fjords, e.g. on top of the flat surfaces and demonstrates that these high elevation flat surfaces characteristic of the Norwegian landscape are in geologically terms young."

The study was made possible because of the large amount of data available for research -- such as seismic profiles and drill cores -- that was acquired offshore Norway by Statoil and other companies. This data offers a very precise image of the Scandinavian sediment history.

Reshaped by glacial erosion

By demonstrating that the entire topography was reshaped by glacial erosion, the study asks for a complete re-interpretation of the tectonic history of Scandinavia.

"This result has important consequences for oil and gas exploration offshore Norway as it aids in the reconstruction of topography in the past, and may also help to better understand past topographic and tectonic evolution of other less-well constrained glaciated areas, such as Greenland. In addition, this study offers a new insight into the landscapes and fjords of western Scandinavia, which are considered to be among the most scenically outstanding areas on the planet, the N?r?yfjord and Geirangerfjord being on the UNESCO world heritage list," Steer says.

One killed in Indian nuclear power plant protests

CHENNAI, India (Reuters) - A south Indian fisherman was killed on Monday after police opened fire to clear a highway blocked by demonstrators protesting against the country's largest nuclear power project, due to start up within weeks after months of opposition.

Hundreds of protesters threw stones at police lines and also blocked a rail route, a police official told Reuters. Police responded by firing a volley of bullets in the air, killing one protester, the police official said. Other demonstrators set fire to a local government office.

Earlier, police used tear gas to break up thousands of protesters on a beach near the Kudankulam nuclear power plant, which is in the state of Tamil Nadu.

About 4,000 activists, mainly women and children from fishing villages, had camped on the beach about a mile from the plant to protest about the threat of radiation.

Protesters had waded into the sea or escaped in fishing boats as hundreds of police advanced on the beach. They threw rocks at police and several injuries were reported by both police and the protesters.

The Kudankulam plant is due to open within weeks and will provide 2 gigawatts of electricity -- enough to power millions of Indian homes and relieve a power crisis in the state of Tamil Nadu. More nuclear plants are planned.

The government's Atomic Energy Regulatory Board last month gave clearance for fuel to be loaded into one of the Kudankulam plant's two reactors, one of the last steps before it can begin producing power.

India is struggling to meet surging demand for electricity and suffers from a peak-hour power deficit of about 12 percent, which has become a significant drag on the economy. A grid failure on two consecutive days this summer caused one of the world's worst blackouts.

First conceived in 1988, Russian-built Kudankulam was supposed to have gone into operation last year, but protesters surrounded the compound after an earthquake and tsunami hit Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, causing radiation leaks and forcing mass evacuations.

The protesters fear a similar accident could happen in southern India, a region that was hard hit by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

India's home minister accused foreign NGOs (non-governmental organizations) for supporting the anti-nuclear protests in the state.

"We are aware that some foreign NGOs are very interested in this. I do not want to name those countries, but we are aware of it," Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde told reporters in New Delhi.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also blamed NGOs for funding protests in an interview published in Science magazine earlier this year.

India plans to add 63 gigawatts of nuclear power by building 30 reactors by 2032. Nuclear accounts for less than 3 percent of total capacity.

But the country aims to increase power capacity over the next five years mainly through coal, which already accounts for 60 percent of India's energy generation. Environmental concerns and mismanagement have slowed growth there as well.

There have also been protests in coal fields in the centre of the country, while hydro power projects in the Himalayas have faced opposition from local tribes.

Congress returns for short pre-election session

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Fresh off a five-week vacation, lawmakers return to Washington on Monday for a truncated pre-election session in which Congress will do what it often does best: punt problems to the future.

They face a slew of deadlines and the prospect of a debilitating "fiscal cliff" in January, yet are expected to take a pass on the big issues of taxes and spending cuts. Their focus seems to be on the bare minimum, preventing a government shutdown when the budget year ends Sept. 30.

Democrats controlling the Senate and their House GOP rivals also will also try to set up votes intended to score political points or paint the other side with an unflattering brush two months before the election. Their efforts are sure to be overshadowed by the presidential campaign.

Topping the agenda of substantive business is a six-month temporary spending bill to finance the government's day-to-day operations. The annual appropriations process on Capitol Hill collapsed about midway through the campaign season. The stopgap measure would give the next Congress time to fashion a full-year plan. There would be no more sure way of driving Congress' approval ratings even lower than for lawmakers to stumble into a government shutdown right before the Nov. 6 vote.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., hope to present the measure this week, with a House vote as early as Thursday. The measure also will ensure a steady flow of money into disaster aid accounts.

More challenging is what to do with one of the most significant pieces of leftover business, a five-year farm bill. It would overhaul crop safety net programs while funding the food stamp program that now provides assistance to more than 46 million people.

The current farm act expires at the end of the month. House Republican leaders are wary of bringing the bill to the floor. It now appears that Congress will at most opt for a temporary extension of the old bill, including drought aid for livestock producers whose assistance programs expired last year.

But it's not certain lawmakers will do even that. Without a formal extension, food stamp and other nutrition programs would continue to function beyond Sept. 30. Most farmers would not be affected because the current farm bill covers 2012 crops regardless of when they are harvested.

The food and farm legislation has bedeviled House leaders because many GOP conservatives want deeper cuts to food stamps than Democrats, whose votes are needed to pass the measure, are willing to go for.

In all likelihood, political votes are on tap. New York Sen. Charles Schumer, a key Democratic Party strategist, wants a procedural vote on the House Republican budget plan written by Wisconsin rep. Paul Ryan, the GOP vice presidential nominee.

"Let 'em embrace it again," Schumer said while making the rounds at the Democratic convention last Thursday.

In the House, Republicans promise a vote Friday on a bill called the "No More Solyndras Act," which would phase out Energy Department loan guarantees for solar and wind energy companies. It's unlikely to even get a vote in the Senate.

Solyndra Inc. went bankrupt last year after receiving a loan guarantee from the Obama administration, even as some White House aides raised red flags. The California company's failure left taxpayers on the hook for $500 million.

But after a full five-day workweek, House members could be packing up and leaving the Capitol by Friday evening to return to their districts to campaign. At most, they'll return the following week. The Senate is also likely to have a shortened September schedule.

What may be most noteworthy then about the abbreviated pre-election session is not what Congress is doing but the stack of must-do work that lawmakers are leaving unfinished until a postelection lame-duck session.

Topping the list is the expiration of the full menu of President George W. Bush-era tax cuts on Dec. 31. The resulting tax increases, when combined with more than $100 billion in automatic across-the-board spending cuts set to take effect at the same time, have become known as the fiscal cliff. Economists warn that unless Congress acts, the one-two austerity punch would send the fragile economy back into recession.

The automatic cuts are punishment for the inability of last year's deficit reduction "supercommittee" to strike a bargain to cut 10-year deficits by at least $1.2 trillion as promised by last summer's debt and budget pact. The Bush tax cuts were originally set to expire at the end of 2010 but were renewed two years ago. President Barack Obama promises to raise the top tax rate on upper bracket earners back to the Clinton-era level of 39.6 percent, up from 35 percent now.

Other pressing issues for the lame-duck session include averting an almost 30 percent cut in physicians' Medicare fees, the food and farm bill, passing the annual Pentagon policy bill, a Russia free trade bill and legislation to reform the Postal Service, which is now losing $25 million a day. Congressional inaction now would mean the Postal Service will default on a $5.5 billion payment into its pension fund that due at the end of the month.

Third annual Business Innovation Summit to be held in Marlborough ...

Marlborough ? The Marlborough Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and the law firm of Mirick O?Connell will hold the 3rd Annual Business Innovation Summit on October 26, in The Campus at Marlborough?s Charles River Room. The invitation-only event will focus on the actions businesses and local governments can take to attract and keep a desirable pool of employees in the Boroughs region.

Gregory Bialecki, Massachusetts secretary of housing and economic development, will present the keynote address at the Innovation Summit. His address will be followed by a panel of executives and experts who will discuss their ideas about how conditions for employees can be improved, from within companies and in their surrounding environment.

In addition to inviting Marlborough-based business executives, the co-sponsors are broadening the list of invitees to corporate leaders and municipal officials who work in the neighboring Boroughs, which are Northborough, Southborough, and Westborough, along with those in nearby Hudson and Hopkinton. The Boroughs are collaborating on new initiatives that will improve the quality of life in these municipalities and help companies lure high-quality employees to the area.

Many employees who work in this cluster of communities in central Massachusetts have the benefit of a ?reverse commute? and easy access to major highways. These communities are considering ways to make their area even more attractive by expanding options for walking trails and encouraging affordable housing and mixed-use developments.

Arthur Bergeron is the chairman of MEDC?s board of directors and an attorney at Mirick O?Connell.

?The economic downturn has been a challenge for many reasons, one of them being the ability of businesses to hold on to key talent every time a recovery appears imminent,? he said.

?Companies cannot move forward if they have high turnover or are unable to entice talented people to work for them. Employees expect more incentive than a paycheck and want to be happy where they go to work every day,? he added.

MEDC anticipates Innovation Summit attendees will learn new strategies for retaining their key employees and recruiting new workers. Moreover, the organization expects to hear ideas about how the city of Marlborough and nearby communities can improve the quality of life for the employees who commute here and the residents who live in the region.

The Innovation Summit will also include the presentation of Mirick O?Connell?s 3rd Annual Business Innovation Award, which this year will honor a business for innovation in employee recruitment and retention.
