In the sixties and seventies, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray made headlines for taking on the Communists and Socialists. He waged his battles both in middle class localities, as well as factories, downmarket areas and slums. For many he still continues to be the voice of the Marathis. Though liberals condemned his fanaticism, he used the Marathi card with great aplomb. It was this, and his espousal of the capitalist cause, that helped him win elections. Thackeray, who died at age 86, used the Congress, just as the Congress used him.
