s/o anxiety thread: people taking you seriously

S/O anxiety thread...

So for those of us who struggle with worries, anxiety, or panic, at any level, with or without medication or other methods of coping -- do you face the problem of having other people (doctors/nurses, family, etc.?) taking you seriously, if they know or suspect you have or have had been diagnosed with anxiety in the past?

I ask because this is an issue I have faced with a specific doctor and an ongoing health problem (complications & chronic pain partially caused by that doctor ended up triggering anxiety, which I suspect led to blowing off questions & concerns, which triggered more anxiety... switching doctors). I know it is also a documented issue faced by women in high risk pregnancies, and have seen it discussed with preeclampsia -- pregnant women tend to worry more with hormones to begin with, but it's so important with preeclampsia symptoms for doctors to listen to patients and take patients' gut instincts seriously. Even if those patients are anxious and hormonal.

I understand it's hard for doctors & nurses (and I'm sure family members ) to deal with on their end -- and so I try to have patience when I feel like I'm possibly getting blown off, and try to give them the benefit of the doubt & not overreact -- but I know it's happened to me, especially during pregnancy.

So how do you respond and make sure you're taken seriously when you've evaluated things as best you can, and have determined your concerns are legit and not anxiety?

I haven't really talked much to my regular Dr's about my issues. Basically I say I am feeling anxious or whatever the emotion may be and they gve me the meds. Pretty easy peasy if you ask me. Heck good thing I don't like these drugs too much.
I usually do most of the talking with a counselor or psychologist. I have only seen a psych twice. Once as a teen and once as an adult and didn't like it either time, much prefer counselors. Speaking of counselors I need to make a s/o thread. lol

As far as family, I talk to very few people about it. The ones I do are very understanding, except my husband has a hard time undrstanding but he at least tries.

My control issues mean that to some point I try not to let on to others that I'm stressed/depressed/panicked/anxious. As long as I put on my "calm" face and present my questions, concerns, and facts in a normal manner, then I get treated normally.

I've seen others who obviously are suffering some anxiety over something appear to get blown off, but in some cases I really think the other person's response was more an attempt to calm them down than to blow them off.

I hate to change the subject but since you all have expierenced anxiety how was it brought to your attention and was there something someone said that made you realize you needed some help?

I'm dealing with this with a family member and I don't know how to approach them without them shutting down. Their anxiety has gotten to where its interfering with most of their day, everyday.

I become aware when I couldn't get into a car with another person driving. My anxiety/PTSD is related to car accidents last year though. People have told me NOW that they noticed I was dealing with anxiety since the accidents, but they never brought it up. I really wish they would have because I could have gotten help/relief sooner as I was suffering so much more than I realized at the time.

Back to the OP...I don't think I have ever been treated different by a medical professional. With that said, all the medical professionals I see I have known since before I developed the anxiety so maybe they understand/see the difference. My anxiety is fairly concentrated as well to the car and other drivers/vehicles.

It took my husband candidly telling me during one of my crying sessions that he thought I needed to see someone and he would go with me and do whatever it would take so that I would feel "normal" again. We began with my
PCP and he went to the appointment with me.

But in your case, I realize this may not work unless your relationship with that relative is VERY good. It also depends on how receptive they are to psychology and meds - a lot of people still think its quack science.
