Mumford And Sons Pay Tribute To Jimi Hendrix In California

Mumford And Sons Pay Tribute To Jimi Hendrix In California

And John Steinbeck...

NME reports that Mumford & Sons paid tribute to Jimi Hendrix and author John Steinbeck during a show at the Monterey County Fairgrounds in California, part of their Gentlemen of the Road Stopover tour.

Monterey is the same location where Jimi Hendrix torched his guitar and smashed it on stage during a set at the Monterey Pop Festival in the summer of 1967. The town was also used in Steinbeck's (The Grapes of Wrath) 1945 novel Cannery Row.

Marcus Mumford said: "There're two guys who hold up this amazing place. We couldn't have picked a better city on the West Coast for our final Stopover.

Mumford And Sons played:

'Lover's Eyes'
'Little Lion Man'
'Roll Away Your Stone'
'White Blank Page'
'Below My Feet'
'Timshel'
'I Will Wait'
'Lover of the Light'
'Thistle & Weeds'
'Ghosts That We Knew'
'Awake My Soul'
'Dust Bowl Dance'
'Winter Winds'
'The Cave'
'The Weight'

They have set up the tour themselves, picking artists like Gogol Bordello, Two Gallants, Grouplove, The Very Best, Apache Relay, Haim and Slow Club to support them by playing in towns and cities usually ignored by bands. The tour began in Huddersfield in June and will go to the Australian country town of Dungog, New South Wales on October 20.

The band's second album, Babel, will be released on September 25.

Kremlin's rights council blasts Pussy Riot verdict

(AP) ? The Russian presidential human rights council is questioning the guilty verdict and two-year prison sentences against three members of punk provocateurs Pussy Riot.

The council said in a statement late Tuesday that "criminal law was used to deal with actions which entail administrative liability only" in the case. Members also questioned why the court did not impose suspended sentences on two of the three women who have small children.

Council members expressed dismay over a decision to keep Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alekhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich hand-cuffed in a bullet-proof glass cage during the hearing of the verdict.

"We are confident that the civil society has the right to demand that Russian justice be governed by the truth and mercy," the council said.

The council is an independent advisory body appointed by the president and its recommendations are not binding. All of its members were appointed under former President Dmitry Medvedev.

The group is up for a reshuffle since some of its most critical members have resigned, saying that they don't want to work under President Vladimir Putin. The new council could be less critical, but has had very little sway over government decisions.

The three women were found guilty of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred earlier this month after performing a "punk prayer" against Putin in Moscow's main cathedral. The verdict caused protests and outrage both in Russia and abroad.

The women on Monday filed an appeal of the verdict which is expected to be heard within the following 10 days. Meanwhile, the band said at least two of its members have fled Russia to avoid arrest.

Disabled pets show they can do all kinds of things | KDVR.com ...

DENVER ? Some special? pets got the chance to strut their stuff over the weekend at the Denver Disabled Dog Olympics.

Nakio the ?bionic dog? was just one of the animals featured at the event. He walks on four prosthetic legs after losing his toes to frostbite.

Even without the full use of his legs, Nakio and other special needs dogs showed they can still master an agility course with finesse and skill.

?With the prosthetics, we can take him on walks. We can do anything a normal dog can do,? says Weston Pace. ?He can run, he can play. Actually, this whole event is kind of to show all these disabled dogs can do anything normal dogs can do.?

The event also helped owners learn how to live with and take care of disabled or special needs pets.

Real Estate Agents - Choosing The Right One ... - Green Site Info

If you are in the market to sell your home, it Michael Vick Jersey is important to choose a real estate agent who will do his or her best job and provide the most excellent services to you. After all, you are looking for quality, honesty, timeliness, and dedication. So how do you go weeding out the good real estate agents from the bad DeSean Jackson Jersey real estate agents? There are a few ways that you can do this. To start with, you will want to know how long the real estate agent has been in practice, and if their licensure is kept up to date. Several years of practice under their belt has given them a world of experience to make a good sale. Also, check what hours they work. If they don't work nights or weekends, then this schedule will fail to accommodate most working people in the mindset to buy. A part-time realtor may not have the time to adequately market your property. In the line of work experience, find out how many properties they have sold in the last year, and the average sale price of them. Ask them what percent of their listings have sold, and if they can provide you with references from homeowners, whose houses have sold, and those who haven't. It is important to find an agent who is willing to disclose facts. If they are a good agent, they won't have anything to hide. Find out how many current listings they have. The fewer the better for you, since an overloaded real estate agent won't have the time to devote to your sale. If they have a full load already, this is the time to say goodbye. Since advertising is key to selling your house, find out if they will commit to a certain amount of money spent each month to this area. An unadvertised house will be too unnoticeable to sell. Request a thirty or sixty-day contract agreement time. This will provide the realtor time to sell, but gives you an opportunity to move on if you are unhappy with them. If they refuse, by all means question why. You really don't want to be locked into an agreement for years, only to find out the real estate agent is not a good one. Also find out if the property will be on the Multi Listing Service, and what their policies on open houses are. These are all key items in getting your house in the viewing area of potential buyers. Question the real estate agent as to how long the property will take to sell at suggested price. Your house may be worth the amount advertised, but quite possibly the area will not get you that price. You need honesty in this matter. Most importantly, do not overprice your Nike Eagles Jerseys house. You may not get any potential buyers attention with this maneuver. The real estate agent will be your home's best opportunity to be sold. It is important to ask questions, and pay attention to detail, when making this selection. You need someone who is able to provide care, time and effort in selling your house. Remember, you are entrusting this individual to handle probably one of the biggest financial transactions of your life. Making the right choice could be the difference between that "SOLD" sign going up or not.

Craigslist adds maps to Portland, Bay Area listings

15 hrs.

Craigslist?has just started integrating maps into some of its listings, but instead of going with Google or Microsoft, the site?went with the crowdsourced OpenStreetMap. The changes are live right now if you're in Portland, Oregon or the San Francisco Bay Area.

Craigslist is famous for never updating its look and feel, meaning things are quick and clean if?a bit stark. But with apartment listings especially, mapping the location is such a standard action that people looking for a new place would be opening dozens of browser?tabs for Google Maps.

In fact, the process of looking at Craigslist ads by location became both so popular and so difficult that a site called PadMapper started up as a way to let people do it more easily. Craigslist actually asked them to stop in June, but clearly they also took the point that maps are now critical information for apartment searches.

But using something like Google Maps institutionally (as opposed to individually) would come with significant cost ? so Craigslist decided to use OpenStreetMap, a system that, like Wikipedia, is created from publicly available information and the?contributions of users.

The good news is that it's free. The bad news is that unlike Google and Microsoft, OpenStreetMap doesn't have millions of dollars to spend on mapping small towns and rural areas, or for checking the accuracy of existing maps. Their community is constantly revising and adding to the database, but their information simply isn't as complete as the bigger, more well-funded services.

That doesn't mean it isn't a perfectly good map of much of the world ? but it doesn't have bells and whistles like driving directions or Street View. It's certainly good enough for Craigslist's purposes, but for now the company is only rolling it out to Portland and the Bay Area, since those areas are well-mapped and have plenty of housing?listings with which?to test the service.

There's no indication of when the integrated maps will come to other areas (or perhaps be rolled out universally), but if they're well-received it seems likely they'll soon be activated for any areas Craigslist feels are represented accurately by the maps. If you're in a big, tech-savvy city like New York or Los Angeles, that will likely be soon, but for smaller towns, it could be a while. In the meantime, you can test it out by browsing housing in either of the areas currently covered.

Reading Up On Thermodynamics

An August 2012 forest fire near the French resort of Lacanau on the country's Atlantic coast. Pierre Andrieu/AFP/Getty Images

Thermodynamics ? the branch of physics dealing with heat and its relation to other forms of energy ? is profound stuff.

Rooted in the engineering realities of engines and air conditioners, it also rises above these day-to-day realities to embrace heady, universal principles in complexity, order, chaos and organization. Thermodynamics touches everything that really matters in human life, including ? most famously ? the nature of time. It is profound and slippery.

?

Some of this slipperiness showed up in responses to my physics and cities posts for the NPR Cities project. Some folks got angry with me because they claimed the second law is only relevent to closed systems. Some of the criticism comes from a misreading of what "closed" means in thermodynamics.

Thermodynamically "closed" systems exchange no matter with their surroundings. Energy transfer however is just fine for closed systems (No energy transfer means an "adiabatic" system). Other folks missed the point that the second law can still be applied to systems that are not closed and systems that are not in equilibrium. This makes sense because the second law would not be so profound if it only applied to things like an isolated thermos of coffee floating in space. In part, it's all about what you call the system and what you call the environment.

But I am no uber-meister of thermodynamics either. That PhD thing I got helps, but I too have to go back, re-read the basics and then build up to the relevant literature on the subject I am studying. (This is true of all scientific work; you are always reviewing the basics.)

Anyhow, I did (and continue to do) a lot of re-reading of my favorite thermo texts and I wanted to pass one of shortest ones of these along. It's called "The Laws of Thermodynamics" by Peter Atkins and is part of the Very Short Introduction books from Oxford. There are only a few basic equations stated for clarity and no math manipulations to follow. I highly recommend it.

Here is an example of Atkins ability to shift from discussion of the precise meaning of work and energy to a broader point:

"A final point is that the molecular interpretation of heat and work elucidates one aspect of the rise of civilization. Fire preceded the harnessing of fuels to achieve work. The heat of fire ? the tumbling of out of energy as the chaotic motion of atoms ? is easily contrived for the tumbling is unconstrained. Work is energy tamed, and requires greater sophistication to contrive. Thus humanity stumbled easily on to fire but needed millennia to arrive at the sophistication of the steam engine, the internal combustion engine and the jet engine."

Good stuff.

How a cartoonist raised $1 million (and counting) for a Tesla museum

Matthew Inman, a cartoonist who runs theoatmeal.com, posted a tribute titled "Why Nicola Tesla is the Greatest Geek Who Ever Lived.'

By Frank Eltman,?Associated Press / August 27, 2012

In little more than a week, donors from more than 100 countries have kicked in about $1 million through a social media website to pay for the restoration of the 110-year-old laboratory.

A jolt of support from a popular Web cartoonist has re-energized a decades-long effort to restore a decrepit, 110-year-old laboratory once used by Nikola Tesla, a visionary scientist who was a rival of Thomas Edison and imagined a world of free electricity.

In little more than a week, tens of thousands of donors from more than 100 countries have kicked in more than $1 million through a social media fundraising website to pay for the restoration of Tesla's Wardenclyffe laboratory, located about 65 miles (105 kilometers) east of New York City. A small band of followers who have struggled to establish a science and research museum and learning center in Tesla's honor are giddy with delight about the lightning-quick response they have received.

RECOMMENDED: Are you scientifically literate? Take the quiz

"Enormously, overwhelmingly, astounding," is how Jane Alcorn, president of the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe and a retired school librarian, described her feelings about the project's newfound fortune. The not-for-profit formed about 17 years ago had managed to secure a state matching grant of $850,000 but had amassed only about $50,000 for the project. Its goal at times seemed insurmountable.

Then this summer Alcorn learned that Matthew Inman, a cartoonist who runs theoatmeal.com, posted a tribute to the scientist titled "Why Nicola Tesla is the Greatest Geek Who Ever Lived." Supporters of the Long Island effort reached out to Inman, a 27-year-old who lives in Seattle, and he and Alcorn began speaking.

Last week, he posted a request for donations on IndieGoGo, a fundraising website, and the response was nearly instantaneous. At 6 p.m. on Aug. 15, the plea went out, and before Alcorn went to bed that night, donors had given nearly a quarter million dollars.

"I was blown away by that," Alcorn said. "I kept refreshing the page and refreshing the page and the number kept going up. I went to bed after 1 that night, but I didn't really get any sleep, to be honest."

Indiegogo put together several charts showing how more than 20,000 people from 102 countries have contributed to the campaign.

Inman, who is in Japan this week on business, told The Associated Press that he thinks "Tesla would be very pleased to see this many people kind of worshipping him as this geek hero" and backing it up with credit card donations by the thousands to restore his lab.

Tesla amassed hundreds of patents for his discoveries over his lifetime. Among his most notable accomplishments are his work in developing alternating current and other research in the creation of wireless communication and radio. He worked for Edison in the 1880s, but later became a rival. Tesla died in New York City in 1943.

Myanmar president announces Cabinet reshuffle

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) ? Myanmar's president announced a major Cabinet reshuffle on Monday, a move analysts see as advancing the once-pariah nation's reformist agenda.

The shake-up is the biggest since President Thein Sein's government took office from the former military junta in March 2011 and launched a wave of dramatic reforms that have surprised the world and prompted Western powers to ease crippling sanctions.

Rumors have swirled for months about a possible reshuffle.

The announcement made late Monday on the president's official website said the overhaul affects nine of several dozen Cabinet posts. Some 15 new deputy ministers are also being appointed.

Among the most prominent changes is the replacement of former Information Minister Kyaw Hsan, widely seen as a hard-liner. He was replaced by Labor and Social Welfare Minister Aung Kyi, who has also acted as a liaison between the government and pro-democracy opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

The information ministry oversees local and foreign media and the film industry, and has supervised the approval of visas for foreign correspondents. Kyaw Hsan was kept in government, however, and appointed to head the Cooperatives Ministry.

The presidential statement did not name all of the new ministers, but said several outgoing ministers ? most considered reformists ? would be moved to four new ministerial-level posts in the president's office. They include the ministers of finance, national planning and economic development, and Railways Minister Aung Min, who has played a key role in negotiating cease-fires with ethnic rebel groups.

Thant Myint-U, a historian from Myanmar and grandson of the late U.N. Secretary-General U Thant, said in a tweet that the reshuffle is "unquestionably a strengthening of President U Thein Sein's reformist agenda, with top academics, technocrats brought into (the) Cabinet." ''U" is an honorific in Myanmar.

Thein Sein has said in recent comments that he would leave behind anyone who is against reform.

Earlier this month, military representatives in parliament appointed the country's politically moderate naval chief as one of the nation's two vice presidents. Vice Admiral Nyan Tun replaced a known hard-liner, Tin Aung Myint Oo, who resigned citing health reasons.

Over the last year, Thein Sein's government has spearheaded unprecedented change in Myanmar, relaxing decades of harsh rule and allowing freedoms previously unheard of in the Southeast Asian nation. Media censorship has eased dramatically, the government has signed cease-fire deals with multiple armed insurgent groups, and crucial investment laws are being rewritten.

But major challenges remain. Rights groups say the rule of law is weak, corruption is strong, and fighting continues in the north between ethnic Kachin rebels and government forces.

Pets or ? well, you know ? | Good Faith Ranch

While I have always wanted horses, I managed to avoid keeping any animal in the ?livestock? category until I turned 50 and decided to get a trio of laying hens. Not realizing, of course, that chickens are ?gateway livestock.?

Within five years? time, I went from three slightly used chickens to 15 hard-working young layers. From a single raised-bed planter to plans for more than a dozen of them. From my childhood Breyer horses to three real ones. And, of course, from a quarter-acre suburban lot to Rancho Buena Fe?.

Coming next: Goats.

Nigerian dwarf goats, to be specific. Small, friendly and productive, with milk for cheese, butter and soap.

I mentioned on Facebook that I was getting goats, and publicly and privately I started getting word of goats who need homes. Farm sanctuary goats. Shelter goats. Mixed breed and meat goats. Because everyone assumes I?m looking for pets. Which I?m not, not really.

The only animals on this place who get a pass are the dogs and cats, and honestly, they contribute plenty in the way of emotional support and endless amusement. Everyone else (except for Bernadette The Weather Duck? and her companion, ABBA) contribute food, in one way or another. As for me, I bring in the mortgage money and I handle all the care. The rest of the animals:

  • The horses get ridden.
  • The chickens give eggs.
  • The goats give milk.

The gardens provide food for me (and for sale/barter, eventually) with leftovers for the chickens, goats and compost pile. The compost pile gives back to the gardens.

But then, there?s the subject of meat. While I eat less and less meat over time (I?m becoming a ?Fork Over Knives? person, and the meat I do eat is largely raised here or purchased from sources I trust)? my dogs and cats are carnivores, and they?re fed that way. I have two massive freezers in the garage, and I?ll soon be adding another to accommodate serving as a drop site for SF Raw Feeders, a spectacular buying co-op that supports humane, sustainable, regional animal agriculture ? small family farms and ranches.

When I first got those three chickens, back in suburbia, I mentioned to my very sweet neighbors (two sisters who share a home) that I would have extra eggs, if they wanted them. One of them said, ?No, thank you. We?re vegans.? After a little probing whether it was a choice for health or because eating animals was unthinkable, I got that it the latter. So I said, ?You know, these eggs come naturally from chickens who live their lives to the best that any chicken could.?

?Oh no,? said the neighbor. ?We could never kill fetal chickens.?

?I don?t have a rooster,? I said. ?You?re not killing anything.?

They insisted you didn?t need a rooster to make more chickens. At that point, I let the matter drop. I just didn?t have the patience to explain high-school biology to them.

And I certainly didn?t have it to explain why feeding the leftovers of industrial animal agriculture to their dogs and cats (in a bad of kibble) negated pretty much everything they believed.

Which brings me back to meat.

I do not need to squeeze every last dime from my animals, which is why those who give a lifetime of eggs (hens), or milk (goats), or service (horses) will live out their lives here even when they no longer contribute. Beyond that, only the horses are guaranteed to never be fed to something else here at RBF. One of my dogs has killed a chicken or two, and when that happened, the unlucky hen is eviscerated, plucked and put into the freezer. She will later become dog food, fed back to the same dog who killed her. That wasn?t my plan for her, but I?m also not going to waste her final contribution by throwing her body into the trash. (Chickens who are sick I kill swiftly and mercifully, but they DO go in the trash ? I won?t feed sick animals to other animals ? which is more than you can say about a pet-food company.)

But chickens are not that hard to deal with emotionally, at least not for me. I can slaughter them, I can butcher them and since I made that leap, I stopped naming them. The two ducks ? Bernadette and ABBA ? are pets. The chickens are not, although there is always the possibility that one or two of them might become so, names and all. But as I said, barring accident or illness, the laying hens will live out their natural lives after they are no longer productive. The meats birds I?ll be raising next spring will not be. While they?ll be well-cared-for every day of their lives here, they will be raised to end up in my freezer, a few months after they come here. And I?m OK with that, too. The same goes with cockerels: We eat them here.

Pets or meat, we get to make the choice. That?s why I have a pet duck who I got after a field-training sessions ? once in which most of the other ducks died. I have no problem with death. I have a problem with cruelty.

And I really have a problem with people who cringe when I talk about killing poultry for the dogs or the table if they?re buying meat someone else killed after the animals were treated with less compassion than shown to your average end table. (I feel the same way about people who whinge about how ?cruel? hunters are, also while eating factory-farmed meat.)

With the goatly additions, though, I have to do some more thinking. That?s because (for those of you unfamiliar with the concept, such as people who believe in immaculate insemination of chickens) to milk from a goat (or any mammal) you need to breed them. The milk, after all, is intended to be given to offspring, not moochers like us.

While industrial dairies would do what industrial hatcheries do with male offspring if they thought they should get away with it (note: if you have a gentle heart, don?t look it up), what to do with males when you?re someone like me is a very big issue indeed. While the female offspring of a productive dairy goat is not problem to sell, there are not many ?pet? homes for neutered male goats, known as wethers. Then what? Goat meat is very good, but I know I couldn?t personally slaughter and butcher a goat I?d seen born. And I?m only barely able to cope with the idea of having someone else do the dirty work.

Yes, it?s the cute factor, I admit it. I don?t ever plan to have meat rabbits, pigs, cattle (even nifty small ones like Dexters) or sheep. If I can?t find homes for the inevitable wethers or deal with having them butchered for my freezer, next to the chickens I?ve killed myself or the meat I bought from SF Raw ? well, I?ll have no milk, just a goat pet.

And that, I don?t want, and can?t have.

The first wether, the boy goat I?m hoping to buy gave birth to a couple months ago, is staying, because goats can?t be kept as singles. He?ll be a pet to me and a companion for his mother. But that?s all the boy goats there?ll be here, one way or the other.

Image: The dairy goat I?m negotiating to buy now. Well-trained and well-mannered, an excellent producer of top-quality milk.

Pets On Furniture: Yay or Nay? | Apartment Therapy

Oscar_on_Rocker2X_AT.jpg

How could you ever say no to Oscar?
Where do your furry friends lie in the hierarchy of your household? Can they go on and in anything in the house? Do they have free range of the furniture?

I have always allowed my cats on the furniture. And honestly, having it any other way would be futile. Besides, the moment you allow cats in your home you have already lost the battle on hair, so really what's the point?

People seem to have polar opposite views on the subject, it really can't be a sometimes situation. Do you have certain expensive or meaningful pieces of furniture that are off limits? Have you ever gone from yes to no with the same animal, and how did you pull it off? Let us know below.

(Image: Rhodesian ridgeback Oscar loves his rocking chair. You can read his blog at Oscar Ate My Muffin. Thanks very much, Natalya!)

Interesting Ideas And Insights For Home Based Business

Share

With the right knowledge, starting your home business is a possibility. This article describes many tips about developing your home business.

When generating product ideas for your home based business, start by considering products that would fill your personal needs. People are always looking for products that solve common issues that they face daily. If you are able to come up with a solution for an issue that you have, it will probably be popular with others.

TIP! Inexpensive, movable storage is one way to protect your significant business documents. The result would be losses in the thousands and having great difficulty when it comes to accurately filing taxes.

Make sure any contracts related to your home business are in one spot, so you will have no problem locating them if you need them. Keep all other important contracts that are essential to running your home business in the same location.

Stay in touch with your customers and send them updates about what you are doing regularly. Let them know about specials, discounts, new content, and so on via your e-mail alerts and newsletters. Do not go overboard with communicating too often.

Business Objective

TIP! If you desire to make lots of cash as a home based business owner, it?s vital that you know when to take chances. When you are willing to try new things in your business, you will find more people interested in what you are doing, which eventually means a bigger bottom line! If you never change your routine or strategies, your business may stagnate rather than growing and improving.

Write a business objective. A solid business objective should offer a short description of the business practices and goals of your company. The objective is your go-to description when asked about your business. It will allows you to impress your customers by being confident and succinct about the purpose of your business.

You should describe your business in a couple sentences, also known as a business objective. The main idea is that you want to establish your company?s goals and purpose for existing. Be sure to explain what makes your company unique and its goals in these sentences.

Business Owners

TIP! Do appropriate background checks on potential employees. Likewise, verify their employment references.

Home business owners are all over the Internet. Search for forums or boards devoted to your niche market or those associated with small business owners. Reading about the experiences of other home business owners can assist you in many ways. You can learn more about your business from mentors on these forums.

When you have a home business, it is very helpful to have a supportive peer group. It can be a good idea to set up your own home business network to easily communicate with other businesses. Even though these people may own a business in a different field, you can use them as a source of motivation which can provide inspiration in building a successful home business.

When it?s time for you to pay taxes on your home business, it?s in your best interests to have an accountant take care of everything. This can help your bottom dollar because you should be spending your time on your business and not on learning laws about taxes.

TIP! Keep proper files for your spending in regards to your business, no matter how small. If you keep excellent records now, when it comes time to pay your taxes you will not spend days on end looking for the proper receipts.

Schedule your work hours, and stick to your plan to ensure that you also get adequate personal time. Determine what time you will stop answering business calls each day. Remember your family, friends, and especially yourself.

Payment Terms

While it may seem to entice customers with discounts when you are starting a business, it is a recipe for disaster if you do it too much. Establish clear payment terms on all invoices and documents, including a reasonable penalty (start with eight percent) over the invoice amount, if the total is not paid within the standard payment terms.

TIP! Patience is key. Get out of the mindset that you?ll be making huge profits overnight, or you?ll face great disappointment.

Use the internet to your advantage, and as a marketing tool. Build a website, or if you are unsure how to do this you can pay someone to create a site for you. Make sure your website is designed in such a way that your customers can easily navigate the site. Make the content on your site useful. Give your customers the ability to purchase products from you online and to remain in touch with you. Learn more about making a profitable site for your home business.

As spelled out earlier, starting a home business and being your own boss is a dream of many people. While the overhead cost of a home business is low, you still need to know what you are getting into

Buzz Aldrin?s Official Statement on the Passing of Neil Armstrong

  • Aug 25, 2012
  • By: Buzz Aldrin

I am deeply saddened by the passing of my good friend, and space exploration companion, Neil Armstrong today. As Neil, Mike Collins and I trained together for our historic Apollo 11 Mission, we understood the many technical challenges we faced, as well as the importance and profound implications of this historic journey. We will now always be connected as the crew of the Apollo 11 mission to the moon, yet for the many millions who witnessed that remarkable achievement for humankind, we were not alone.

Whenever I look at the moon I am reminded of that precious moment, over four decades ago, when Neil and I stood on the desolate, barren, yet beautiful, Sea of Tranquility, looking back at our brilliant blue planet Earth suspended in the darkness of space, I realized that even though we were farther away from earth than two humans had ever been, we were not alone. Virtually the entire world took that memorable journey with us. I know I am joined by many millions of others from around the world in mourning the passing of a true American hero and the best pilot I ever knew. My friend Neil took the small step but giant leap that changed the world and will forever be remembered as a historic moment in human history.

I had truly hoped that on July 20th, 2019, Neil, Mike and I would be standing together to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of our moon landing, as we also anticipated the continued expansion of humanity into space, that our small mission helped make possible. Regrettably, this is not to be. Neil will most certainly be there with us in spirit.

On behalf of the Aldrin family, we extend our deepest condolences to Carol and the entire Armstrong family. I will miss my friend Neil as I know our fellow citizens and people around world will miss this foremost aviation and space pioneer.

May he Rest in Peace, and may his vision for our human destiny in space be his legacy.

Home on Lake Travis perfect for entertaining with indoor and outdoor

By Nicole Villalpando

Art Kissinger and Dan Cornwell had been living in San Antonio but looking for a lakefront property in Central Texas when they found this quiet spot on the Sandy Creek Arm of Lake Travis in Volente. Both with real estate backgrounds, they went through 10 sets of plans to design a perfect home for entertaining.

While they bought the property in 1998, construction finished in 2005 after 18 months of building.

One important thing to Kissinger and Cornwell: They did not want it to look like a typical Texas Tuscan home. Instead of limestone, they chose a stone with reddish brown hues from a quarry in Arkansas. They say the style of the house is more country French.

While they have loved living on Lake Travis and the vibe of Volente, they have decided to venture into multiple living sites: a place downtown, starting a bed-and-breakfast in East Texas and a mountain home in Colorado. They have put 8416 Lime Creek Road on the market for $3,325,000 with Michael and Stacy Spickes of Realty Austin.

During the construction, a rumor began to circulate that it was being built for George Clooney, Kissinger says. He heard it from a man passing by while the home was being finished. Later, he heard it from real estate agents in the area. Kissinger jokes that if George Clooney wanted to buy it, they could make it officially the Clooney House.

The gated property opens up with a porte-coch?re under a large circular drive.

Through stone archways, find the front door set back from the driveway.

Travertine floors flow from the foyer to the large dining room, with built-in buffet with glass-fronted cabinets and a large window. Further ahead, the rotunda with a mosaic inset reveals the circular staircase upstairs. The rotunda?s dome is finished in metallic paints, the same as the foyer ceiling, which changes color as light hits it differently throughout the day.

The living room features a 50-inch stone fireplace, walnut floors and a large, arched window overlooking the lake.

To one side of the living room is the office with built-in alder cabinets and the master suite.

The master bedroom provides a bay window and fireplace surrounded by the same stone as the exterior. A doorway between the bedroom and bathroom leads to a private porch and the backyard.

The master bath offers two separated vanity areas with Juparana Persa granite, marble and travertine. The walk-in shower features multiple showerheads, as well as a separated steam shower. A jetted tub sits before it. In one unique feature, the toilet area offers its own small sink. The suite offers a large closet with many built-ins.

The other side of the main floor provides the large kitchen with Juparana Persa granite island and counters, alder cabinetry and stainless steel appliances. The pantry provides plenty of space for small appliance storage, and the kitchen also offers a coffee or wine bar.

From the kitchen, the family room unfolds with a glass door that completely folds into the wall, creating a seamless transition to the balcony.

Beside the family room is the octagonal enclosed sunroom, a full breakfast room and a pool bathroom that is done in peacock color scheme with a stained-glass peacock window.

The pool area is immaculately designed with a spa, a bridge over the pool, a beach area, swim-up seating and a water slide, all surrounded by stone and tropical landscaping.

Underneath the balcony is a porch with a grill area and a storage room for pool equipment and the home?s seven-step water filtration system. The home is legally able to pull its water from the lake.

At the other end of the house is the utility room with a pet shower.

Upstairs, a large media room offers rows of leather theater seating. An open game room shares a full bathroom in a Jack-and-Jill setting with one of the two bedrooms up here. The other bedroom has an en suite bedroom.

Walkout access above the octagonal room provides another balcony with lake views.

The home enjoys 155 feet of waterfront with a walkable and drivable concrete path down to this arm?s deep waters. The property sits between two marinas ? Sandy Creek and Volente ? and while a boat dock could be added, Kissinger and Cornwell opted to rent a boat from a marina instead of own one.

One of the things they will miss most about this house is the ability to entertain 200 people easily and the family room?s sliding glass door.

?We?ve thoroughly enjoyed it,? Cornwell says. ?It will be hard to sell it.?

Business Travelers Gone Wild - Thailand Business Leader

Twitter and a Social Entrepreneur

ginza

Ginza District, Tokyo, Japan

I have a confession. we am one of those people who indeed enjoys business travel, despite in moderation. It?s not that we suffer being divided from my mother and kids. we skip them tremendously. While some call it a travelers bug, and others call it wanderlust, for me it?s a incentive that we have to wander, to travel, and to try a world. we suffer experiencing new places, new cultures and new things. Over a final 18 months, in a business context, I?ve visited some 30 countries, some-more than 300,000 miles or roughly a stretch to moon.

Business travel, for a many part, has mislaid a turn of interest it had in a heyday. Yet some things still sojourn a same. we can tell we that Suntory whiskey sipped in a decrepit fume filled bar in Tokyo?s Ginza (??) District is a lot some-more sparkling than Jack Daniels during a Houston Airport lounge. Business transport for me is equally about a knowledge as it is about a relations we have built on a highway and a stories we can tell when we get home. On a other hand, I?ve also seen a massacre business transport can wreak on those who are not good versed for it including damaged marriages and a operation of other amicable problems. In fact, business transport should substantially come with warning label. Let this post be a cautionary tale.

Recently On24, a association focused on?webcasting?and?virtual events took a closer demeanour during a problems compared with a supposed ?work / life balance.? ?The association supposing an online survey, conducted by Harris Interactive, of over 2,000 American adults called ?Your Time, Your Life, Go Virtual?. It was divided into 3 sections to inspect attitudes on work / life change and a impact on people?s lives.?The formula suggested a often-bizarre incidents that start on business trips and a ?bad behavior? people trust occurs while they?re away. It also does a good pursuit of illustrating because business transport is apropos increasingly unpopular.

In terms of a broader judgment of work/life balance, a consult showed that 85% of Americans trust that work infringes on their personal time, and they contend that prolonged hours (55%) are a primary cause, along with operative weekends/overtime (54%), employers perfectionist some-more in a bad economy (49%), business calls or emails on personal time (49%), and their possess too-easy entrance by smartphones and tablets (34%).

When asked about how many they value their time, a startling trend emerged.? It turns out that a respondents value a peculiarity of their life some-more than a apportion of it.?Interestingly, when asked if they were peaceful to do anything for only one some-more year of life, 33% pronounced they would not. The consult also showed that 91% of Americans trust that too many time divided from home due to work has consequences, including 75% citing increasing highlight levels and a startling 70% who contend it can outcome in a unsuccessful matrimony or relationship.? Other things that can outcome from too many time divided from home due to work were: health problems (63%), rebel kids (54%) and an increasing luck of affairs (45%).? Interestingly, women were some-more expected to prove an increasing luck of affairs than group (48% vs. 42%).

The consult also looked into Americans? thoughts on business transport and behaviors off-site during trade shows and conferences.? ?We researched several true-life stories of business transport left bad and asked a respondents to arrange that events they find many outrageous,? explained On24?s?Chief Marketing Officer Denise Persson. The tip answer:?checking into a hotel room that already has a vast bare male defunct in your bed (38%), followed by receiving an unlawful drug smoothness to your hotel room that we didn?t sequence (21%), removing food poisoning from an airfield food opposite (9%) and being scolded by a TSA for wearing an underwire bra (6%).

But it turns out a conditions can get even worse when we arrive during a gathering itself.? Some 94% of a people pronounced ?bad behaviors? start among people travelling divided from home to attend business trade shows and conventions, with 71% desiring people splash too many ethanol while away. Additionally, intrigue on a associate (66%), spending too many income (54%), eating greasy dishes (53%), not adhering to practice slight (43%), going to bed late (42%), and holding unlawful drugs (31%) were all mentioned.

?These formula illustrate that Americans trust their work-life change is out of whack,? pronounced Persson, ?and that fuels their flourishing dislike for business travel, their rancour and their enterprise for control of their possess lives and how they spend their time.?

Dr. Michael Santo, Founder CEO of Rembrandt Advantage, a association focused on physiological contrast of employees, says ?that business transport doesn?t means infidelity per se, though instead, a transport itself provides an event to do what there was a proclivity to already do.?

According to Santo, a charlatan is going to lie and a drinker is going to drink. This is only easier to do in a business transport environment. He also says that in some tools of a universe there is a informative aspect as well. For example, in China and other tools of Asia, there is certain expectancy that we will get inebriated as partial of a business routine itself. Santo points to what he describes as ?appropriate engagement? or what is mostly simply called mediation as a best solution.

Motorola Electrify 2 (U.S. Cellular)

The Motorola Electrify 2 is about two months too late. Back in June, it would've been a shoo-in for the top smartphone?on U.S. Cellular, even though it lacks access to the carrier's new 4G LTE network. It's still a very good phone?it has a powerful dual-core processor, a good camera, and a sleek, svelte design. But without LTE, it just can't compete with the Samsung Galaxy S III.

Design and Call Quality
Think of the Electrify 2 as a cross between the Motorola Droid Razr and the Droid Razr Maxx. It isn't quite as thin as the 0.28-inch-thick Razr, but at 0.33 inches, it's still a bit trimmer than the 0.35-inch Razr Maxx. At 2.59 by 5.06 by 0.33 inches (HWD), the Electrify 2 cuts quite a profile. And with its super comfortable, lightly patterned Kevlar back, it feels rich and luxurious?much more so than the plastic-feeling Galaxy S III. Weighing in at 4.59 ounces, it's also nice and light.

The 4.3-inch, 960-by-540-pixel qHD capacitive touch screen is sharp, though some may not dig the PenTile layout,?which can cause some text and and images to appear slightly blurry.?I found it less distracting here than on other phones, though. Either way, this display is no match for the 4.8-inch, high-res beauty on the Galaxy S III. If you're looking to do considerable Web browsing or watch a lot of video, that's the phone to get.

The Electrify 2 is a world phone that supports dual-band EV-DO Rev A (850/1900 MHz), quad-band EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz), and dual-band HSDPA (900/2100 MHz) for 3G speeds on foreign networks. It also has 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, which worked fine on my WPA2-encrypted network.?Unfortunately, there's no 4G LTE support. While U.S. Cellular's LTE network is still being built out, and we haven't yet had a chance to test it, we expect it to offer much faster speeds than 3G. So if you want to make sure your phone is future-proof, you should look for something that supports LTE, like the Samsung Galaxy S III.

Voices are loud and clear in the Electrify's earpiece, though somewhat thin and digitized. Transmissions sound natural and easy to understand, with decent background noise reduction. Calls sounded fine through a?Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset and Motorola's voice command system worked well over Bluetooth. The speakerphone also sounds fine, but doesn't get loud enough to hear outdoors. The nonremovable 1780mAh battery was good for an impressive 9 hours hours and 51 minutes of talk time in my tests.

Processor, Android, and Apps
The dual-core 1.2GHz processor is very fast. It packs enough power to handle any game you throw at it, or any of the 500,000+ apps in the Google Play store, but it isn't quite as fast at the 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm S4 in the Galaxy S III. General performance is mostly comparable, but gaming frame rates are noticeably higher on the Galaxy.

The Electrify II is U.S. Cellular's third smartphone to run Android 4.0.4 "Ice Cream Sandwich," though there's no official word about an update to Android 4.1 "Jelly Bean." You get five home screens you can swipe between and customize. These screens are mostly blank, but if you look in the app menu, you'll find that there's plenty of bloatware installed here, unlike the squeaky clean Galaxy S III. Unfortunately, the majority of it cannot be uninstalled, though you can disable it from showing up in your app menu. Still, why be forced to house an app for the Zappos store for as long as you own your phone?

One interesting addition is Motorola's SmartActions app. It allows you to follow a set of rules that make it easier to accomplish a particular task. You can create your own rules, or follow some of the templates Motorola has already made for you. The Low Battery Saver rule prolongs battery life by turning down your screen brightness and shutting down power-draining features like GPS and background syncing. And the Drive Smart rule switches the phone to vehicle mode and reads?incoming messages?aloud when you're driving.

Unlike the original Electrify, there is no Webtop mode here. And unless you already own a device with Webtop, you never will. Motorola has killed the feature.

Multimedia, Camera, and Conclusions
There's 5.07GB of free internal storage, and an empty, side-mounted microSD card slot. My 32 and 64GB SanDisk cards worked fine. There's a 3.5mm headphone jack right in the center of the Elecrify's top edge. The phone was able to play all of our music test files aside from FLAC, and tunes sounded good through both a set of wired earbuds as well as Altec Lansing Backbeat?Bluetooth headphones. It was also able to play back all of our video test files in resolutions up to 1080p, though audio was seriously out of sync over Bluetooth.

The rear-facing 8-megapixel autofocus camera has an LED flash. Photo performance is okay, but not the among the best in its class. On the plus side, autofocus is fast, and once it's locked in, the camera can snap photos almost instantaneously. But images can be noisy, and not as detailed as you'll see from other 8-megapixel sensors. Thankfully, the camera records solid video. Indoor and outdoor footage played back at a smooth 30 frames per second and looked sharp. There's also a VGA front-facing camera for video chat.

Lack of 4G aside, the Motorola Electrify II is still a very good phone. But as it stands, the Samsung Galaxy S III is a better deal all around. For just $20 more, you get twice the amount of internal storage, a larger, higher-resolution display, 4G LTE support, and a faster processor. It's U.S. Cellular's top-of-the-line superphone.

If for some reason you're not a Samsung fan, or you want a phone that's a little smaller and easier to handle, and you can deal with the lack of 4G, the Motorola Electrify 2 is a top choice. It's better than the rest of the competition on U.S. Cellular. The?HTC Merge?is a world phone with a full QWERTY keyboard, while the Motorola Defy XT?is a small, easy-to-handle phone that's ultra-rugged. But both are stuck on Android 2.3, and both are less powerful than the Electrify II. The Samsung Galaxy S Aviator?is U.S. Cellular's other LTE option, but it too is running an older version of Android on midrange specs.

Abused as a child, Saints CB Marquis Johnson uses NFL platform to help other victims

Bradley Handwerger / WWLTV.com Sports Reporter

Marquis Johnson stood in front of his second-grade class for show-and-tell and levied a threat to those who would listen.

Hurt his mother and pay dire consequences.

Startled by what she heard, Johnson?s teacher phoned Victoria Anderson, his mother, wondering exactly what was going on at their home.

?He got up in show-and-tell and he told them he would kill whoever if they hurt me again,? Anderson said. ?She thought it was my current husband at the time. I was like, no, it had to be my past. That was my first awareness of anything.

?That?s when I first started talking to him and trying to find out what had been going on before we moved to Orlando.?

Johnson had witnessed his mother being verbally abused. What his mother didn?t know was that her son also had been abused himself.

His comments in class were the first signs of how troubled parts of his childhood had been.

Now with the New Orleans Saints, Johnson is ready to speak out against childhood abuse, ready to help those overcome the struggle the same way he has been able to.

?I?m not trying to be out there to have my name out there,? Johnson said. ?But I have a story to tell, a testimony, and it doesn?t just need to be used in church. I want to be able to spread the word. I?m hands-on.?

Mental, Verbal and Physical Abuse
Johnson, 24, grew up in Sarasota, Fla., with his mother, who had him at 18. His father, George Johnson, was a football standout and went off to play football in college.

The abuse started when Anderson ended up with her first husband.

?He was abusing him when he saw his biological father in the streets,? Anderson said. ?I started hearing things of that nature and then of him spanking him in public and stuff like that, which I didn?t give him permission to do that.?

Johnson said it was more than just spankings, however.

There was verbal abuse and mental abuse that went along with the physical.

Yet, in spite of Johnson?s second-grade show-and-tell experience, Anderson said she never fully knew how bad it was for her son.

?A lot of things I was unaware of until recently,? Anderson said. ?Some things I did and it was due to past relationships that I had, but it was things that I found out recently, when he got into college and they tested him for ADHD and some things came out that I was unaware of myself.?

Johnson isn?t alone in experiencing abuse of some kind while being younger than 18.

According to Dr. Joy Osofsky, professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at the LSU Health Sciences Center, there are 3.3 million reports of child abuse every year, of which nearly a million are confirmed. The latest data shows that 12 out of every 100,000 children up to the age of 18 experience abuse.

Staying Away from Trouble
Johnson could have become another statistic, another person passing the abuse along to the next person.

But Anderson made sure, as much as she could, to keep him active and away from the rough home life and neighborhood she believed she was hiding from Johnson.

?He always stayed involved and I always kept him in things,? Anderson said. ?It was a joy watching him participate in sports and he also sings so participated in choirs and church activities and he grew up in the boys and girls clubs. I kept him busy to keep him out of things and away from negative things in his life.

?It was kind of an escape from the everyday household situation.?

Anderson also partly credits Johnson?s involvement in church as a reason he was able stay strong and not head down the wrong path.

?I kept him in church,? Anderson said. ?Now I hear more of that. I really think that helped a lot as far as that (goes).?

Johnson played football and basketball growing up before picking up singing in the choir. He did whatever he could to stay away from his house.

?Sometimes, like any parent or anybody that you know, when you have a lot of issues going on and at the same time, work isn?t good, they come home and they kind of put it on you or the family in general, the stress,? Johnson said. ?That was a way for me to get away from everything.?

This helped Johnson get to where he is today, an NFL defensive back expected to contribute on a playoff-contending team.

For that, he can thank his mother, the same one he wanted so dearly to protect as a child.

?For people to overcome that adversity there has to be some positive influence,? Osofsky said. ?Obviously, his mother made good decisions for him. ? It?s very important (he had) someone who believes in him.?

Understanding, Helping Out
That doesn?t mean, however, that he never got angry about what was happening to him.

?I know how I am sometimes mentally if I think about it, how sometimes angry inside and filled up one kid can be,? Johnson said. ?I can imagine what those kids are going through and even adults how they?re acting and behaving today.?

So Johnson formed the Quis 4 Kidz Foundation, an organization aimed at helping children overcome abuse to lead successful lives.

Johnson already has begun giving talks on the speech circuit, expressing the need for a quality work ethic as a way to escape the dangerous path of being stuck in a bad situation.

?It?s just not good,? Johnson said. ?I try to help them out and say I?ve been there. I?ve actually been there. You can ask. I always tell them don?t take what I say and just do it good for one week. You need to keep doing it and remember it.?

Johnson said he has turned to help in his past to help overcome the abuse mentally. And through that help, he has learned to not use his abuse as an excuse to do the same to others.

?I treat others how you want to be treated,? Johnson said. ?Let?s do everything, let?s be equal so I won?t go past this.?

Overcoming Abuse, Attaining Success
Anderson is still unsure of how her son was able to hide the abuse for so long. She said she began to truly find out the night in April 2010 that Johnson was drafted in the seventh round by the St. Louis Rams.

In other words, Johnson became a major college recruit and a key contributor to Alabama?s 2009 national championship and an NFL draft pick in spite of his struggles.

That he got to the point where he was drafted is a testament to just how tough Johnson is, Osofsky said.

?A lot of children are resilient, but some are better able to overcome,? Osofsky said. ?? He is able to say bad things happened to me but I was able to overcome it.?While he was the head coach in St. Louis, Steve Spagnuolo said he selected Johnson partly on the player?s character. Now with the Saints as defensive coordinator, Spagnuolo is happy to have Johnson still around.

?There was no indication to me,? Spagnuolo said. ?I don?t have a lot of experience in that realm to know how young children react to that. But that being the case, my hat goes off to him. A great deal of respect for the person he has turned out to be. I think he?s a very accountable guy, a very smart guy.?

Johnson, now in his third season, isn?t deep on experience. He has played in only five games, missing parts of both 2010 and 2011 with a knee injury.

He has worked with the first-team defense early in training camp with cornerbacks Jabari Greer and Patrick Robinson spending time on the sideline injured. He also has spent time in the nickelback position.

?You?ve got to take full-fledged advantage,? Johnson said. ?This is a small league. They?re rotating you quickly. The thing you want to do is when somebody gets hurt, you want to be able to come in and play you like you are a 1. I?ve just been doing that.?

Regardless of whether he ends up playing a lot or not, though, Anderson is and will always be proud of her son for overcoming so much to come so far.

?I always tell him how proud I am of him of all his accomplishments and I always try to encourage him to keep praying and keep working hard and doing the things that he?s doing,? Anderson said. ?That brings a light in my life, to be able to come and do things and see him play ball and talk to the community and the kids about what he went through and to be a motivation to them. That makes me proud and gives me honor to be his mom.?
