And John Steinbeck...

NME reports that Mumford & Sons paid tribute to Jimi Hendrix and author John Steinbeck during a show at the Monterey County Fairgrounds in California, part of their Gentlemen of the Road Stopover tour.

Monterey is the same location where Jimi Hendrix torched his guitar and smashed it on stage during a set at the Monterey Pop Festival in the summer of 1967. The town was also used in Steinbeck's (The Grapes of Wrath) 1945 novel Cannery Row.

Marcus Mumford said: "There're two guys who hold up this amazing place. We couldn't have picked a better city on the West Coast for our final Stopover.

Mumford And Sons played:

'Lover's Eyes'
'Little Lion Man'
'Roll Away Your Stone'
'White Blank Page'
'Below My Feet'
'Timshel'
'I Will Wait'
'Lover of the Light'
'Thistle & Weeds'
'Ghosts That We Knew'
'Awake My Soul'
'Dust Bowl Dance'
'Winter Winds'
'The Cave'
'The Weight'

They have set up the tour themselves, picking artists like Gogol Bordello, Two Gallants, Grouplove, The Very Best, Apache Relay, Haim and Slow Club to support them by playing in towns and cities usually ignored by bands. The tour began in Huddersfield in June and will go to the Australian country town of Dungog, New South Wales on October 20.

The band's second album, Babel, will be released on September 25.
